T/C Set Triggers
« on: January 31, 2010, 01:44:10 AM »
I traded for a Hawken and the set trigger doesn't work.  You can feel it set but the lock will only drop to 1/2 cock when you pull the front trigger.  It drops all the way if you don't set the rear trigger.  I've adjusted the set in both directions with no change.  Am I missing something?

If you don't get it figured out, send the stock with the trigger and lock in it to Thompson Center.  They will make it right.

Possibly a problem with the fly.

The fly is there and it's moving.

There were 2 screws on the back side of the lockplate (bridle screws)that were pretty loose.  I tightened them and the set is now working.

The problem really doesnt sound like it is associated with the set trigger but perhaps another problem within the lock?

Usually, if the set is too light you cannot get the hammer to stay in the full cock position.

To adjust that set trigger, make sure the screw in between the two triggers is backed out say 1/2" and then place the hammer in the half cock position. You then advance or tighten that screw until you hear the lock snap. When that happens, back the screw out one full turn. (Please note that the hammer will stay in the half cock position while you are doing this)...You can repeatedly Set the rear trigger then snap the front with your finger to check the operation with that hammer again, being in the half cock position.

Good Deal!

(unrelated) I had a scary moment with the set triggers when I purchased the T/C Patriot pistol in the 80's...With the rifle you set the rear and fire with the front but with the Patriot you set the front and fire with the rear :o...Long story short I think it was the rifle that I had in hand when I lined on the target, set the trigger, and she went Boom!...this was an insult to pride already injured as I owned the rifle for five yrs before owning the Patriot.

The Patriot (a .45 cal) is great fun to shoot, 9" barrel with large Partridge style sights and the front one being hooded. It is no slouch with 35gr of triple F and the 127gr patched ball at around 1,100fps. It shot excellent @ 50yds and very good after adjusting for the 100yd range but when I shot the 50yd range again it printed a whopping 11" high. I believe that I adjusted the sight for a couple inches high @ 50yds after this and it is where it remains today. The rate of twist in the Patriot will not allow for a conical.

FWIW, It helps to think of the trigger group and the lock group as separate, but related mechanisms.
Make sure that each functions correctly on it's own first, then assemble and make them work together.
When you are not used to set triggers you can end up working on the wrong stuff if you dont keep the above in mind.
