Naval 24 Pounder Pt. 3
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:46:45 AM »
The carriage and wheels are made from Jatoba, I also c'bored the ends of the brass axles and inserted a piece of Jatoba and faced to a domed shape. Still have to make brass collars for the axles then they will be cross drilled and pinned
like the originals. After resawing and planing the Jatoba I finished the carriage cheeks and axle beams in my small mill. I still have to make finish sized trunnions and silver solder them into the trunnion pockets and finish the carriage. The last pic. is my progress so far. No, it's not going to be painted, after final sanding with 800 grit paper it will be finished with Watco Oil.   ;D
I'll get back to work on her in a couple weeks and I'm already thinking about
what to build next.

   Regards
     Joe

Oops, question answered. Just didn't read your post thoroughly enough.

New question - will this be a shooter or a display piece?

It's not a cannon unless it's a shooter...except for Zulu of course! ;)

Good looking setup!  I like the contrast of the bronze on that wood.  I look forward to seeing it finished to see what the oil brings out in it.

Josco -

NICE WORK.

I like your setups too!  Something cool about precision woodwork on a milling machine using a mixed set of fixturing.

Josco ,thats good news as you'll make an honest lady of her , fired a few times . You know the first question anyone who see's it in your den will be ...Have You Shot it ?

You will be able to say ..."oh yes I have.." that'll be true .... after that your imagination is the limit ! ;D

Great work Josco ! :o

That's a fine looking naval rig, Josco; good job!
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.
