.358 factory silvertip ?
« on: January 08, 2010, 11:23:27 AM »
Does the 200 grn silver tip have enough power to shoot through a large black bear ? I always used .250 hornady handloads but don"t have the stuff to load anymore and now all I have is 5 boxes of factory 200 grain silver tips. Has any one done penetration tests with the 200 grn bullet or shot a bear with one. Would like any imput you could give. Thanks

Quit overthinking this.  Folks use 243, 30-30 and less for big bear.  Use your factory silvertips.  They were made for this kind of hunting.

Save your brass for when you get around to reloading.

It may or may not make it out if major bones like the spine are hit at really close distances. BUT its a fine bullet for large thin skinned game like the black bear. You will be hard pressed to find a better caliber for this game.

I agree with mogwai, don't over think this... use them!

I hit a fallow deer with one from about 130yards and mis-cued the shot and placed it high into the spine. Projectile only went about 4" and shredded itself. I recovered a rear portion of jacket and lots of lead schrapnel. I no longer trust that projectile if it hits heavy bone or I need deep penetration. Broadside, I'd plug most things with it.

The Hdy's are a tougher bullet and the V is less. You may not get full penetration with the ST's. They wil do the job if you put them in the right place.
