O'Brien or Leno?
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:59:13 PM »
I must admit that I've never seen the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, but I have seen O'Brien on his previous show and I thought he was an outstanding talent. Did he blow it on the Tonight Show? Or does Leno just have a good contract?

Did O'Brien get replaced by Leno yet?

Give me Leno any day.  I've never found anything O'Brien, or for that matter Letterman, have done that is the least bit funny.

I like both of them to be honest.  I do think O'brien pretty much got shafted though.  Basic situation if you're not familiar:

Leno had announced his retirement (a few years back) and that he was stepping down. He later had second thoughts and essentially wanted to back out of the retirement, but Conan had already been announced as the successor for The Tonight Show. So, they gave Conan The Tonight Show and moved Jay to a new 10:00 show.  Problem is, at 10:00 most people just aren't ready for a late night show and ratings of neither show was doing great.  They basically wanted to try to shift Jay basically back into his old timeslot where The Tonight Show WAS when he hosted it, and then shift Conan back into the later slot again.  Effectively, "demoting" his show and giving Jay back the Tonight Show, in spirit if not in name.  Conan, pretty much understandably, declined.  While I haven't heard it officially announced, most feel that after Conan works out parting terms with NBC, the network will just give Jay back the show completely (in name and in timeslot).

I hope that Conan gets a good show somewhere though.  Not a lot of openings at the moment with Kimmel on ABC and Letterman on CBS (neither host of which I particularly like), but I'm sure he'll end up somewhere.

Leno anytime. O'Brien just never seemed that funny to me. About the only piece he did, that I thought was any good, was with the hand puppet dog that smoked a cigar and was obnoxious. That was funny. gypsyman

Who can stay up and watch this stuff so late? College kids and senior citizens I would imagine? I'm in bed near 930 ET.

I've never like O'brien.  Leno was the best ever at what he did IMO.

I do not like the way Leno delivers his stand up... tells the joke then tries to explain it.
I never have been an Obrien fan.

I read that Leno never stated he wanted to retire as some people are claiming. Conan was threatening to leave the network and they promised him Leno's show to keep him put, then negotiated a deal with Leno to keep him from going to another network. It backfired when Conan lost an estimated 40-50% of the Tonight Show viewers and for the first time in what...30 years? the Tonight show was not #1. That is what is driving this whole deal. I think Conan's style appeals to a segment of the viewership, unfortunately it is not the segment that watches TV after the late news. I have watched the Tonight Show for at least 30 years, tried watching after Conan took over but just can't do it. Conan spends too much time laughing at and milking his own jokes, and the sidekick thing is about as funny as hemmoroids, but he spends alot of time there. Also, that band is godawful, I wish they would just sit there and not play.

The media is trying to paint this as  "Jay vs Conan" or "NBC being loyal to Jay"  and neither is the truth.

Like kshock said, Conan ratings are half what Jay's were when he left the Tonight Show.  If he (Conan) had kept the ratings (or raised them @ all), Leno would be out the door.

This is revenue issue, pure and simple.

Quit watching late night shows when Johnny Carson quit ;D

That being said, I'd take Leno over O'Brien[or Letterman for that matter].  I don't think O'Brien OR Letterman are the least bit funny......

I've managed to live without either.
So neither is fine with me.
Late night talk shows don't do it for me.
I'll watch the re-runs or old movies.

You have to be up on current events or Leno isn't going to be funny.  He's one of the few that can make me laugh out loud.

Leno is often accused of being a left winger but is apparently a Democrat.
