45 LC 250gr Hornady XLT???
« on: January 02, 2010, 05:30:08 PM »
I've picked up some 45 LC ammo.
Using 250 gr. Hornady XLT bullets at 1100fps.
I've heard good things about this bullet but what have others experienced?
Looking for something above a cowboy load and under a Buffalo Bore load.
This is intended for a deer hunting load both out of my Bisley Blackhawk and Winchester 94 Trapper.

Thanks,
Wayne

My new Hornady 7th edition lists 19.7grn of 2400 at 1150fps with col of 1.595".  This is actually a starting load under Ruger & T/C only.  I have used it and it is a good load but my Bisley 5.5 gets better accuracy with the 300 grn XTP, at the same speed. 8)

Not sure what the Hornady XLT bullet is, it's not listed on the Hornady site but I use the 250 and 300 grain XTPs for my Ruger Blackhawk (4 5/8") and Winny Trapper.  The Trapper likes the 250 gr load over the 300 grain as well and I load it with 20 gr of 2400, shoots good in both the Trapper and the BH.  The BH likes my 300 gr XTP load better as well, 20 gr of 296.  Note: both loads are low to mid level Ruger/TC loads, don't see any since in pushing the limit when these loads do the job and shoot plenty accurate.

Thanks guys.
Probably a typo on the manufacture's part, he offers his ammo on gunbroker.
1100 fps might be a starting load but it's still a handfull in a handgun.
Just used up my supply of PMC ammo, that was a 300 gr soft point at 1100fps.
Don't handload yet so on the prowl for a decent factory deer hunting load.
Looking forward to testing this load out once the temps here get back into double digits.

That's a good load with that 250gr bullet. I use the same bullet and 25.7gr of H110 bullet as the starting load on Hornady's Annual indicates and its a powerful Ruger/TC load. I'll have to chronograph it but I think its getting a little over 1300fps in my 7.5" 45LC Blackhawk.
I used that load to shoot a hog around 40 yards away and it blasted through both sides on a sideways presentation and kept going. I had a 454 casull at the time and could remember thinking what did I need it for unless I was shooting 3 hogs with one shot. The 45LC colt was plenty enough and even the 1300fps velocity was more than enough and outperforms the wimpy 44 mag loads that manufacturer's seem to be producing nowadays.
God created man, Col. Colt made him equal.

Thanks, that's what I'm looking for, actual critters harvested. Seems like pigs are a great testing medium, too bad we don't have them up here to test on and eat. Then again from what I hear from those that do have them running around loose they are a headache and a half. I'll stick with my home grown hogs and test on the local doe heard.

That load will do the job.  You will likely get pass thru shots broad side.

I used something very similar for years, before I began shooting Hard Cast.
For deer sized game the Jacketed bullet may be better than Hard Cast, but I went with the later, cause it's cheaper, has more penetration at any angle, and works the same way every time.

TB Maker:

Be glad you don't have hogs.  They eat too much that game animals would ordinarily eat.
(They are good to shoot, and good to eat though)
