Waterfowl in the Panhandle ?

Would like info about waterfowl hunting in the Panhandle. Any Guide Services? Who to contact.Any info appreciated.

I had family up in Pampa, I remember hunting the playas, just big pot-holes of water scattered all about.  Saw an article about the same hunting in wildfowl magazine a while back.  Sorry I'm not too much help, but yes, there is excellent hunting to be had there.  Another might be lake meridith, its the only real lake for miles and miles, and I would immagine a good resting spot for birds on the way south.

Meredith is pretty good. not much hunting pressure either. you can hunt quail in the afternoon.

Westtx, Thanks for the info. Both outfits look good. Will study this and pass it on to my hunting buds. We have a trip set for March to NW Missouri for snow geese during the conservation order but need something for January.

If you get a chance to hunt Sandhill Crane, take it. They are a blast to hunt....can't use a dog, but are like trying to bring down a B-52 bomber and taste great too.

I did that in '68 or '69!  It was great shooting.  The anatomy of the sandhill was somewhat different than the ducks we had previously cleaned for cooking, but the result was good anyway!

(No, I don't remember the details from forty years ago!)

westtx  Shot cranes up in Sask one year. They are fun and like you say can`t use the dogs. I guess you guys cook them different than me cause I couldn`t stand them. That`s why I never hunted them again. Must need a new receipe.

Cut the breast acoss the grain in about 1/2 inch slices, soak in buttermilk overnight and then chicken fry. Or cut with the grain and make jerky. They have the nickname of "Ribeye in the sky" around here, lol.

WESTTX, Now youv`e gone and done it. I`m going to have to go shoot some cranes to check your receipe. I don`t shoot anything that I don`t eat is why I quit hunting them but I`ll try again. We have a season in Ks so I will look into it. Probably to late this year since everything has been iced in for about a month.

MRBIGTEX, The guides up in Sask told us that a crippled crane is very dangerous to dogs with that long beak.
