Question
« on: December 16, 2009, 04:07:49 PM »
Middle of December is not the time for female Squirrels to drop kittens
but one of the 2 I got this evening was ready to drop. Any body else
had this happen this late in the year? I really hated this.
I thought they dropped a litter in early spring and another in mid fall.

S.S.

lately, i have come to believe that squirrels can breed about anytime there is a lot of food available to them.

A few years ago and after a very poor fall season, i hunted in mid january and found every old beech  tree just full of young squirrels. these were litters that were still together. there had been a huge mast crop that fall but very few squirrels found.

like you, i have taken squirrels that were pregnant that seemed to be out of season.

I went out after the first good cold snap in late November(first frost is October here). All that was out in my honey hole was tiny little guys. I guess about 50 1/4 grown squirrels. I never seen little ones that late in the year. I couldn't help my self. Since my good spot was ruined for the year I took the 2 biggest little guys for the pot and decided not to hunt it again until next year.

The next time I went out I went to another creek bottom and they were all adults. I guess it is like you guys said and there was plenty of food for a late litter. Those squirrels raided my apple trees and the little ones were right behind the house.
