Looking at a Ruger no. 1 in 7x57 comments please

I have been looking at a number one in 7x57 cal and would like some input on this.
I had a no.1 in 22-250 and my son has one in 30-06. we have found a fix that is said to work to make them group better with out having to let the barrel cool between shots, dont think it would be a problem in deer hunting as more than likely we would only get one shot anyway. what is your opinion on the 7x57 round and is it the same as 7mm mouser?

i have a 1A in 7x57, same as the 7mm Mauser and also known as the 275 Rigby.

i think its one of the all-time greats. does it all well without lots of kick. wonderful bullet selection available. classic. the perfect deer cartridge.

Excellent cartridge in a classic rifle.  I too have been on the lookout for a 7x57 in Ruger #1.  It will do anything you need it to.

I saw one at the last gun show in Tulsa Ok. was willing to take 700.00 for it and was as new, He was asking 825.00 but was near close of show so was willing to deal I had just loaned my son money for the 06 so had to pass but there will be another I hope.

I've NEVER heard a single bad word about a 1A in 7x57.  I had one years ago.  I sold it to help pay closing costs on my first home.  I still regret it to this day.  I bought it when I quit Wal-Mart, as a starting bonus for myself at my new job.     The only load I ever shot in it was the Remington 140gr PSP load.  Not the fastest horse in the race, but that rifle grouped it under an inch for 5 shots every time.  Hot or cold, dry or wet, slow fire or as fast as I could drop the block and reload.  I am totally convinced that you can't find a better rifle/cartridge for the dedicated "hunter".  By that, I mean someone who walks/stalks/still hunts.  With it's short overall length, it's a dream in the blind or tree stand too, but a long range beanfield rifle it isn't.

I had a 1a No 1 in 7X57 and it shot acceptably for hunting but not great so I sold it.  I do have a Ruger 77 that I bought over 35 years ago in 7X57.  This one is a tack driver with groups of five shots averaging under 1 inch at 100 yards.  I have successfully used it for deer, antelope, elk, caribou, wild boar and moose. It does it all with proper bullets and bullet placement.

Don't get your hopes up. Guns America has one for $1250. I would not sell mine for anything less. The model with the Manlicher fore arm is even more expensive. All #1 models went up quite a bit. I recently saw a 7.3x74R for $1425.

I guess I am lucky to live in mid west. The number ones in our area gun shows go for between 625.00 and 875.00 that is for used and most are like new and show little use. Like I said in my original post there was a dealer who had I think 5 left and all were from a collection with rings. He was asking 825.00 your pick but was willing to take 700.00 your pick ,one of which was a 7x57 with great wood. My son picked up an 06 and I had to lend him my buying money so was not able to get the 7x57.
This past Sunday at the show in OK.city there were a number in the same range but 22-250 ,223 cal.
also saw a very nice TCR 83 in 223 cal.with nice wood and a great scope for 825.00 but was willing to come off the price a little, but I was in a selling mode and short on cash oh well there will be others.
We have a gun show every weekend now till the first week in Jan.2010, Sooner show this weekend in Tulsa so will see what turns up there, it is the next biggest show of the ywar.

Are you talking about one in  7x57 or any caliber?  There are two on GB in 30/06 and 270 NIB for $829.00.

They are dandy rifles.  Mine is a good shooter out of the box with the 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and also the 154 gr Hornady RN.  I have taken a number of hogs, coyotes, etc., with it and hunted with it extensively.  Hard to imagine a better stalking rifle.  I read the other day that Ruger is discontinuing the chambering in the No. 1 ... whether true or not, it would be a shame as the 7x57 is in my opinion the best fit for the 1-A Light Sporter.

Like I said before they come through the gun shows here all the time and cant see buying off the GB site and paying shipping and FFL. I have a 30-06 in the gun safe that my son fell out of love with and I can get it for just paying him back on his investment 850 with scope and is like new. The gun show price here is 650 to 850. Cabalas had a hornet new out the door for 750. at the smaller shows there are at least a dozen and at the larger shows you can find anywhere from 25 to 50 or more, there is one dealer that always has at least 10. I guess they may be hard to find in other parts of the country but not on Oklahoma so I just have to look till I find what I wont.

I bought my 1993 Ruger #1 International (aka "RSI") in 7x57 from a fella who needed a quick $800 to add to the money he already had in order to buy an original Colt SAA out of a gun collection that was being broken up and sold off by a friend of his.

He offer the little beauty with the Mannlicher-style stock (great figuring in the wood) and a 20" barrel to me and threw in a nice Bushnell 3-9x by 40mm scope, an unmarked, like-new deluxe all-aluminum gun case and two boxes of factory loaded cartridge for $800. 

I couldn't pass it up even though I had absolutely no use for the rifle other than I had always wanted to own one.  Then, too... I was swayed by the fact that the rifle looked absolutely brand new.  There wasn't a mark or "ding" on it anywhere.  The original owner said that he had only shot the rifle 20 times using one box of factory loads.

While working up both "accuracy" and hunting hand-loads, I found that the RSI was very accurate IF I allowed the short, thin barrel to cool down between shots.

I couldn't be happier with the rifle... especially since I had my gunsmith install a Kepplinger Single Set Trigger... it's truly a "classic" looking rifle in every sense of the word!

I believe you'll also be very happy with a #1 in 7x57... a great deer cartridge.

As I said in my original post I have been looking at a number one in 7x57 my son has one in 30-06 that he bought and did not care for with a new nikon 3x9 prostaff and is like new that I can get and I know there is a wide range of ammo off the shelf all the way from 90 grn up to 225 and you can get ammo almost any where in the world where as the 7x57 I would be limited at least in my area as only the big gun shops have the ammo. Hard to decide, bird in hand is worth two in bush At the Sooner show in Tulsa this past weekend there was at least 35 no. 1 at the show that ranged from 22 hornet up to 300 mag but no 7x57 and price range 625 to 875.

ihave a #1 in 7x57. i waited 2 years to get it. cost me 1149.00 can. i use 175 gr bullets at 2500 with it. it shoots the first two at 1/2 inch the third at 3/4 inch. it has no recoil to even talk about.after 50 years of magnum rifles, this little number is the sweetest thing i ever owned. i live where the yukon moose and the grizzly are daily occurances, and i dont feel undergunned in any way. what a great calibre. you cant go wrong with this.

Went ahead and bought the no 1 in 30-06 from my son it is real nice like new and I had it in my hands and had shot it so any way I will still keep an eye out for the 7x57 more than likely there will be 5 at the next gun show now that I dont need one.

I have two single shot 7x57's. One is a Remington Rolling Block that shoots pretty well with GC'ed lead bullets. The other, my favorite for accuracy and hunting, is my H&R/NEF Handi Rifle with a nicely figured American Black Walnut stock set on it. H&R does not make the 7x57 barrels any more but they are a great gun for the money if you are lucky enough to find one for sale. I replaced the stock set on mine from "walnut stained hardwood" to real walnut and I really like it....<><....

Saw an International 270 Win. at the gun show in St. Paul yesterday.  Nice condition with better than average wood.  Asking price was $750.

That is a good price.  Not a caliber I am interested in, but a good price.

7 x 57 is a classic !

I currently have a .22-250  I've owned since 1984 & a .30-06 I've owned since since 1998  in  Ruger #1's , both guns were purchased used  , so I'm uncertain on their actual ages .

I almost traded the .22-250 for a 7x57 at one point around 2000, but after I went home ans brought my trade back to the gunshop  and laid them side by side there were a dramatic differences in stock grain ,wood finish and quality on polish of metal and blueing  , so much so that I just couldn't part with it .

There was nothing wrong with the 7x57 ..........the .22-250 was just manufactured differently .

The differences were incredible .

Even the clerk at the gun shop was shaking his head , "I wouldn't do it" .

Ruger No.1 in 7x57 is a Great match up. The 7x57 is extremely versatile. I'm lucky enough to have and love both the No.1RSI & No.1A - and hopefully (some day ...but not too soon) I will pass them on to my grandson
