Probably My Biggest Coyote EVER! Pics
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:47:42 AM »
I got my scope changed out for low, or no light yesterday, and this is the result. I dumped him (big male) at about 200 yds, just before sunrise this morning. He was moving away when I whistled and he had to stop and take one more look.
I would guess he goes close to 70 lbs, and is very fat due to him and his buddies getting calves. The cow man was happy as he (the coyote) was leaving a dead steer when I got him. Looking at his teeth I guess him to be about 4 years old. The stock on my rifle is full extended to give you an idea of his length, and you can pretty much see how tall he was. I didn't find anything (markings) that would lead me to believe he was a cross.
52 grain match hollow point done the deed.

My brother in law calls varmint up on the Mogollon Rim here in Az.  A coyote that size would hang as a prized hide on any ranchers barn and as the word spread the bar b que would be getting started for the song dogs wake.  My brother in law took down three large feral dogs from a pack of a half dozen cattle killers in one morning, last one running at about 400 yds with his 270 and got the rest in the next two days.  The rancher celebrated with a half steer on a spit BBQ for the neighbors and gave the other half to a Navaho family for a Kinallah.  The hides are still tacked to to the barn wall.

Congrats Dee. That's one big, pretty Coyote. Are you going to have that hide tanned?

A big one for sure Dee (even as compared to our easterns here in Central IL) and fat like you say. One thing about those Coyotes is that they are always hungry but yet the majority that I have taken always seem to be well fed.

I like to study all pictures "especially of western verse eastern" and submit the following picture just for your comparison. Seems like our's have a broader nose and shorter ears than yours?

Nice coyote, good to get rid of a big 'ole calf-killer like that.

Naw, if I tanned every hide, I would be broke. I just helping the cow man out, and entertaining myself too. I have got three off his place this week without even getting out of my Jeep. Hope to get another in the morning.

Dee, He don't look like he's went very far from the pile. What scope did you go to for low light and how do you like it? I'm looking for a new scope. Glad you're having fun. ;D

glancebamm, where'd ya get that bloody dog. Everytime I look at that pic I swear he has some Chow in him. Either that or Chinese :D

I was using a 2X7 Leupold Vari-XII and I went to 3.5X10 Leupold Vari-XIII. Much bigger bell, and I can zoom in and still pick up early morning light. I have only killed 3 out of 7 shots because of the low light, and probably my bad habit of trying to compensate. It's light enough to see it's coyote, but they still look black against the dead grass, and have no definition. It is like shooting a well difined shadow. But I have killed enough of them as soon as it starts getting light they start movin back into the creek bottoms. They are still pretty arrogant and hang out just away from the bait.
I haven't hunted at night in over 10 years so I guess I'm out of practice also. I won't quit until I get back in my old groove.

Dee........Good shooting! Now what kind of scope is it you have now on your rifle and what caliber are you shooting?

I just got the new 17HMR going the other day and also the Triple Deuce .222 in a CZ rifle. I hope to go out later this afternoon, while the snow is still on the ground. :)

He do look kinda Chinese to me also ;D perhaps just the close up?

A couple more Central IL yotes

I wasn't real happy with the top one (taken last on this hunt) as that case contained a Sierra 55gr BTHP that was meant for the groundhogs (as was round #3 in that M77) but I was in a hurry & never planned on getting a double.
This resulted in a ping-pong ball size hole in the off-side of the hide.

Once home I quickly put my 20rd travel pack in order. I am not telling what bullet I had in the chamber at the start of this hunt cause it starts great arguments here...Lets just say that it is very tough and makes small in's & out's but kills like lightning via hydrostatic shock when used at the calling ranges of 150yds & under.

  Nice looking duo..good score..
In .223, are you fellows more likely to use 45 or 55 grains on yotes ?

DEE,
 GOOD JOB!!
That's a big one for sure, even comparing them to the easterners around here!!  I have seen a 68# shot by my buddie. I have a 63# myself form a bunch of years back.

This year has been slow.. only two small blond ones, right at or just over #40:

A couple years back, while archery deer hunting, I got three, all mid fifties in weight. MAN did these STINK!!! I had these tanned as when do you shoot three all at once with a bow?? I didn't skin them as the stank so badly.. my taxidermist was none too happy. I told him he would earn his price this time. ;) :D I just had the "tubed".
