Seat stem for pointy bullets in RCBS 357 max dies?
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:55:02 AM »
Just got the reamer in the mail. In making up a dummy round I discovered the seat stems that come with
the 357 dies are for wadcutters and round nose bullets. What do you do if you want to seat a SSP bullet?

I drilled mine with successively sized bits to get a 'cone' shape.

Works fine albeit a bit crude.

Drill the nose flat out as mentioned, deep enough for the point to not 'bottom out' & see if the bullet ogive is contacted by the punch. If so, it will tend to be somewhat self-centering and may work OK if you have the bullet reasonably started straight in the case mouth.
If not, or just because you want to, you can coat a bullet nose with a little cooking oil and mix up a small batch of epoxy. Put the epoxy in the punch and with the bullet sitting square in a case mouth, run it up & into the punch. Let the epoxy set & you have a perfectly fitted nose punch.

Call RCBS and tell them you need a 35 cal. Rifle spitzer seating stem. They sent me one no-charge for my .357 dies. My RCBS .357 dies adjust to the length I need, with out a set fo Maxie dies. If you need to crimp, buy a Lee FCD or a RCBS Max seating die only.
