I want to shoot my ML through my chrono, but...
« on: January 19, 2010, 11:51:40 AM »
1. I'm worried about the sabot hitting the skyscreen rods or the front of the unit.  Now I can cover those up maybe with some plywood but..

2. how is the chrono gonna get a good reading if the bullet passes through followed by the sabot?

I know a bunch of you guys do it, have you had these problems

I shoot thru the chrono a bunch... I place the chrono at 10-12 feet and set up so that I am shooting a few inches under the sky screens, course if it is a cloudy day you do not even need the sky screens.

I have a plastic debris screen that covers the front panel.

The chorno measures the first thing through or across and then resets - usually it can not reset fast enough to read the sabot - When the sun is shinning just right I have had the chrono miss the bullet and read the sabot.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

I have shot the M-L throught the chrony some. I had it out 20 ft or so. I didn't protect the panel but maybe will next time, never did hit it with a sabot. I got a steady 1950 fps with 120 grns of B209 & a 250 grn SST.

I set mine at about 10 feet and managed to burn the readout screen which required sending it in for repair. Now I use a plexiglas cover over the readout so that powder does not burn the screen. I did not find the sabot to be a problem.

I killed my ProChrono at fifteen feet with a sabot to the screen face.  $40 repair job.  I now use a plexiglass shield for the chrono itself, but the skyscreen rods are still unprotected.  I know sabots have hit them, but no damage to the unit (so far).
