Did some shooting with my 500 S&W....
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:41:17 AM »
I picked up a Handi 500 S&W recently and I finally got around to shooting it. I loaded up some Hornady 350 XTP, Remington 385 core-lokt, and some CPWFNGC 440 bullets. Some loaded somewhat mild, some near maximum. I plan on using this rifle next deer season and I got a while to get accustom to how this gun shoots. I really didn't try to get perfectly sighted in, just to get on paper, and punch some paper. I shot a total of 30 rounds and yeah this rifle does kick some. I had some decent groups of around 2" at 50 yards and couldn't do no better since my scope went south after about ten rounds fired. I had a simmons 2.5 x 20 shotgun scope on it but it doesn't focus now. So now I have to get a good scope for this gun and get back to shooting. I wish I could use open sights, but my eyes don't focus like they used too. I just wanted to say that by next deer season I'll be ready, and WOW does this gun have the power to do the job......

Elmo,
Sorry to hear about the scope. I had my .500 out recently and while the 3X Leupold held up, the scope mount didn't. I put a DedNutz mount on it and locktite on the threads hoping to have better luck next time. I'm shooting the 440s out of mine over a top load of LilGun. I was getting pretty close to having it zeroed and it looked like a good load and then the mount shot loose. They do have a bit of recoil to tend with. I cut my barrel down to 16.25" and with the scope mounted it only weighs 6lbs. 11.8ozs. Not much to absorb the recoil at the bench. I'm looking forward to hearing how you make out. I'll be sure to share my results with you on my next range trip.
