Encore hammer spur
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:33:36 PM »
Thanks for the help with my firing pin. During the course of that question it was mentioned that it would be good to lose the hammer spur which I see is a piece of advice mentioned with frequency as I look at old posts. How are you safely managing the hammer with a scope on, I would say I have an average size thumb, I have a medium size 1.5 Cabela's Alaskan guide scope mounted and I can not get my thumb on the hammer to where I feel in control. Is there something different you are doing. I don't like the idea of getting that swivel hammer installed by T.C. Thanks again.

Well, I probably have a larger than average thumb and shoot a number of scoped Encore & Contender barrels.  I just come in from the side and catch the hammer with my thumb.  That technique works well for me and doesn't bother me at all.

When mounting a scope on an Encore barrel I use high or super high rings so that I have a little more clearance for hammer operation.  When I first mounted a scope this high I wondered if my sight acquistion would be impaired by the scope being so high but I don't even notice it.

Luckyducker, thanks, using higher rings is a good idea that did not cross my mind. What rings are you using exactly?

LIH, I have a set of Weaver 30mm superhigh rings on a 204Ruger and I don't recommend them, and I have a 1" set on a 7mm08 barrel but I don't recall what brand they are but I like them.  The Weaver brand rings are steel, as that is all I use, but the female threads that accept the screws that hold the rings on the base stripped out very easily and I had to go the hardware store and buy longer screws and decorative nuts to fix this.  These are both Weaver style.  Sorry I can't be more help.

Why would you not want a swing hammer?, I have it on my pro hunter and love it!, and it's only $60.00 installed at the factory problem solved.

Concerning the swing hammer I favor the walnut stock and the look of a classic single shot the rotating hammer just seems like another screw and part which I guess the spur is too. I may come around as I had never thought I would be shooting anything other than a sidelock a couple years back also.

I have a Pro Hunter with the swing hammer
I put a heavy hammer spring I could not cock hammer under scope with my thumb
I had to use both hands to cock hammer
Put factory spring back and all was back to normal
