Remington Magnum caps too small???
« on: January 22, 2010, 10:22:37 AM »
I went over to shoot the Remingtom 700ML today and I had a tin of Remington Magnum primers, plus some others, with me. But they don't fit the nipple because they are far too small!! They would start on, but I couldn't get them far enough on to fire on the first strike. The other #11 Remingtin caps fit fine, and fired with no problem. But not the tin marked #11 Magnum. Is that normal.

Not sure. I'll have to look at the tin again. All I noticed was the #11 Magnum. What would be the significance of 1075 if it is on there?

1075 = 10 & 1/4  i thought maybe you had some of those which would explain the tight fit.

You could have an enlarged nipple ( no you dont need to make an doctors appointment  ;D )

I'd go buy a new package of nipples with the correct thread size for your rifle and see how that does. The end just might be a little flares causing that tight fit.

Thanks.... I have about 300 that fit ok so I'll just use those for now.  Caps are tough to get around here. And the only number on that tin is 0310.  But I have no clue what that is for either.

1075's are RWS Dymamit Nobles - they are undersized at 10.75 on purpose to provide better water proofing while on the nipple post.  They are also corrugated so that they will stretch over a normal #11 post.

Could the tin of Remington's be #10's - of course they look exactly like an 11 but are used on pistol nipples.

Another thought might be has the nipple been hammered/peened to the point that it might be to large.

I use the RWS 1075's on all of my #11 nipples and they work great - probably the best and hottest #11 offered.

These are the #10 Remingtons..

I'm beginning to think that is the problem because all the other tins that are marked #11 fit well. I don't know how #10s could get in that tin, but I suppose it's possible. And if nothing else I gained some knowledge I didn't know by asking the question. Yesterday was the first time I've fired a bp rifle, and to be truthful, I had a ball and it shoots real well. I have to use bp where I'm going to hunt hogs so between that rifle and my bp revolver I should do just fine.
Thanks everyone.

Yup..... Just like casting and loading and hunting and fishing and kayaking and...... Heck, I'm 70 and retired, and I still don't have enough time to do it all. But I sure do try!  lol
