284 Handi
« on: January 21, 2010, 11:02:43 AM »
Have any of you guys reamed the 7-08 handi to the 284 winchester. Just wondering if it is possible. Don't know if the 284 would clean up the 7-08 chamber without setting the barrel back. Also I was wondering if the rebated rim on the 284 win would creat an ejection problem. The 7-08 is a great caliber but I just love the 284 win.

There are a few 6-284s around made from 243s so I think its should be doable.

I've shot a 300WSM H&R which has a rebated rim, it ejected fine, the round itself didn't work out tho, just too much breech thrust. It looks like it would clean up fine to me, you wouldn't even have to change ejectors, whether the SB2 frame would handle the breech thrust of the .500" case head is another question tho, I don't recollect anyone doing a 284 Win here, someone did a 6.5x284, but I don't recollect a range report on it.

Hey Tim, if they handle the thrust of the 500 S&W, wouldn't they work for the 284? ???  DP

The 500 S&W is a straight walled round, bottlenecked rounds have more effect on breech thrust from what I understand and why I've never had any issues with breech to barrel gap even with max loads in the 500 or Ruger loads in the 45-70, but have with max loads in the 300WSM and 280 Impr.

Looking at the cartridge diagrams and the lack of ejector problems, it looks like like a viable conversion. I'll report back on this project for those that might be interested.
