What is the opinion here on a factoy deer hunting cartridge in 44 Mag? I have a SBH w/ 7.5" barrel.
Also, is a hollow point better or is a jacketed soft point better becaause of penetration?

1. Federal 300 grain cast core.
2. Winchester 250 grain Platinum Tip

On broadside lung shots at 50-70 yds a JHP of 200-240 gr will give cmplete pass through and put a deer down quickly.

I was told by someone who apparently knows a couple of years ago that this was one hot round.  Rangers working parks in areas were big bears are known to frequent are allowed to carry .44 magnums.  After some testing on balistic gelatin this round won out over all others.  I didn't have the opportunity to harvest a deer with it yet, but if the pounding I get on my end tells me anything . . . look out whitetail.  Also, with an Ultradot scoped Ruger Super Redhawk (9 1/2" barrel) she's printing 2" groups at 50 yards.  I'm happy.

Side note:  I'd be interested to see what the velocity of this round is out of my gun.  Don't have a chronograph . . . maybe for Christmas.

I reload with 240gr Hornandy XTP (jacketed hollow point). I will be hunting with it this year for the first time, but have shot it alot and
groups well. I have a SRH 7.5" bbl.
good luck!

If you are looking  for a good factory load try the remington 240 grain jacket soft point.  I have used it on black bears and they worked great. Now I reload and have been using 240 grain XTPs.   :D

I have the same gun/ Nikon 2x scope. Our normal range for white tail is 40-75 yds so before I started to reload for this cal I used 240gr jacketed flat points as opposed to hp's. I think some mnfg. call them soft points as well. Check out Mag-tec line I really don't believe you need a premuim bullet for local deer at short ranges.

What about the Remington 275 grain JHP Core-Lokt?????

It looks great on paper but does anyone have any firsthand experience with this cartridge???

Thanks,
Steve

Probably the most accurate factory load that I have found is the Federal 300-gr CastCore. I have a 3x mounted on a 7.5" Ruger Bisley. It may be overkill on Whitetails, but I know it's gonna go where ever those crosshairs are. Ya can't kill it if ya can't hit it! So I stick with what works.

i dont think a premium bullet is needed for whitetails.   i would go with which ever ammo brand your guns shoots most accurately and forget about the gimmick they are using to market it.

Guys you hit it right on the head. Go wit what works best in your gun. Gris said it best you can't kill it if you cant hit it!!!!!!!!! I have some experiance with XTPs, they work great. I killed a boar with one shot. And killed a ram with them. If you reload, they are the way to go. But are hiprice for paper.
Praise GOD, and pass the ammo!

I use both rifle and revolver in .44 for deer and hogs. I only reload once in a while and have had great success with the XTP in 240gr. So, I assume that their factory load would work similar. However, I tend to not take the necessary time to reload and have used many factory loads with great success too. Win. loading the Nosler Partition Gold 250gr. and, most often, Speer Gold Dot in 270gr. tend to be my favorites. I have used the Gold Dot in both my Marlin and my Ruger Redhawk. Accuracy is good, recoil moderate and have never had a deer or hog travel more than 30 yards after a good heart/lung shot. I would recommend you try several brands and loads to see which one works best in your firearm and practice, practice, practice with that load.

Good Luck!
