« on: January 22, 2010, 01:36:52 PM »
I would like to install a floating floor in the great room.I am on a concrete floor slap.
I been over to both Lowes who sells Bruce and Home depot who sell Homelegend.
I am flipping between the Bruce floors or Home legend.
I see the bruce floor are 3/8"
and the home legend are 5/8" both seem to have the top wood about the same thickness just the underlayer seem different any idea who makes the better floor both have a 25 year warranty

I would be very leary of any such product that is only guaranteed for 25 years.  You usually get about what you pay for, but it really pays to shop around.

I installed a laminate floor in our kitchen that has a lifetime guarantee and I think it is a Mohawk product.  I did a lot of research and shopping before I settled on this brand and it wasn't cheap, but I'm so glad that I didn't settle for something less.  That's not to say that there aren't other very good brands out there.

Check out the type and thickness of the finish coating and compare.  There are several types of under pads.  I found that the best is not necessarily the most expensive.  Be sure that you understand the installation requirements; give it at least a 3/8" border to float in.

And finally, don't use your best carbide saw blade to cut the stuff, because it will be ruined.  By all means use a carbide blade but be aware that it will be toast at the end of the job--or maybe before the end.

It's important to shop around and take some samples home to see how it looks. When we re-did our kitchen floor a few years ago the original concept was to use a hard-wood type flooring. We ended up buying one that does not look like hardwood and is more like marble. It looks right in our house whereas there's already so much wood in our house that hard wood floor would have looked bad.

I put down DuPont Elite from Home Depot with the antique oak finish in our kitchen, dining room, utility room, and hall three years ago. It still looks like it was installed yesterday. No wear or scratches at all. My wife loves it. Because she likes it so well I got to put it in two bedrooms last fall and have one more to go.

Another good thing about it: It is made in the USA.
