Looking at Haiti news I found this in the Miami Herald regarding Britain:

Gordon Brown orders courts to be fairer to householders
Gordon Brown has sent out a clear message to Britain's courts to be fairer and show more "mercy" to householders who confront burglars.

The Prime Minister spoke out following the release from prison last week of Munir Hussain, the businessman who was originally sentenced to 30 months for attacking a burglar who tied up his family at knifepoint.
Mr Brown made it clear he backed the decision by the Lord Chief Justice to reduce Hussain's sentence to a suspended term and added: "The law should lean as far as possible on the side of the householder."

The Prime Minister's first intervention in the wake of the case, made exclusively to The Sunday Telegraph, will send a strong signal to courts that they must do much more to protect the interests of "law-abiding citizens" who take on intruders.
His comments came as it emerged that one of the criminal gang who held Hussain and his family hostage – who originally escaped jail because he was deemed unfit to plead – could face a new trial.
Prosecutors have ordered a fresh psychiatric report to determine if Walid Salem remains too brain damaged to stand trial for a string of offences including the false imprisonment of Hussain, his wife and their children at their home in High Wycombe, Bucks.
The Sunday Telegraph has launched its Right to Defend Yourself campaign, which aims to change the law on self defence in favour of householders.
Currently they can face prosecution and conviction if they use anything other than "reasonable force". ....... etc see link

Sheesh! It appears in Britain one can't defend their family?? If my family is threatened I won't be reasonable at all until and unless I can end that threat.

The Brits have a rather martial song called "Rule Britannia"... Check it out on wikipedia. One of the quotes there about the original meaning of the poem is this: "These reflect Britons' pride in being afforded more freedoms than residents of other nations."
 
The chorus goes like this:
Rule Britannia,
Britannia rules the waves,
Britons never never never shall be slaves

Now it should be called "Rules Britannia" and the chorus would be
Rules Britannia,
Rules our cradles to our graves,
Britons are learning to be slaves.

Truth is the USA still has (for awhile yet anyway) more freedom than residents of other nations, though with more rules from cradle to grave mixed with political correctness, corruption, and greed for power are taking chunks out of our freedom nearly every day.

We must not become like Britain where even such a natural thing as defending yourself or your family results in state punishment and oppression.
