223 barrel for hunting
« on: January 12, 2010, 01:51:36 AM »
I am looking to purchase a 223 barrel for coyote hunting . I have been using a 22 Hornet but want to extend my range . I am ignorant on much of this but what is the main reason for using the heavy barrel over the tapered barrel. I would think the heavy barrel would be more accurate ? For carrying the gun while hunting which barrel would you buy? Thank You

The heavy is stiffer and takes longer to heat up. These are normal good traits for a barrel. There is no quarantee that it will shoot better as every barrel is a law unto itself. If I have a choice, I always go heavy. I have a 14 inch bull barrel T/C in .222 Rem. It will shoot 2 inch groups at 200 yards. It will out shoot many .22 center fire rifles. This one just shoots.

I purchased a 21" factory tapered 223 barrel for my Contender carbine and I am completely amazed at how accurate it is.

With H322 powder, Win LR primers, once fired Rem brass, 40gr V-Max I get 3400fps and have put 3 shots into 1 1/4" @ 300 yards.

Here is a pic of a coyote I shot last year with this set up the shot was only 40 yards I called the coyote in from over 400 yards away using a Primus Ki-Yi call and it was -30 degree celcius.

The scope is a Burris Mini Mag 3-9 Ballistic Plex reticle mounted with Leupold PRW rings and a cheap Weaver base until last week that is when I switched the base to a s/s MGM base.

I do find the BP reticle lines to be a bit thick for long range target shooting though.

I just had returned too me a Leupold Vari X 11 4-12X40mm that I had sent it in for a free warranty check I had them install a LR reticle, I was going to put this scope onto this 223 barrel so I could wring out more of it's accuracy but just ordered a Robinson Arms XCR in 223 for predator hunting so decided not too change scopes until I have a chance to work up loads for the new rifle when it gets here.
