Laminated Thumbhole Stocks
« on: January 21, 2010, 10:01:23 AM »
I did a search on the topic, but didn't find a lot of current info. I'm specifically looking at putting a Boyds featherweight thumbhole on a 300 WM or 308 Savage sporter barrel. I'll be going the laminate route because I like the look and feel versus a composite.
Just wondered how many had experience with them on hunting rifles and do you like them?
I had one on a A&H Muzzleloader and liked it because it really helped steady that muzzle-heavy gun.
Thanks,

Have a bunch of boyds thumbhole laminates, only one is the featherweight and I didn't get to bedding it yet so I haven't shot it yet.  I do like all the ones that I do have so far.  Some are a little wildly colored though.  I have gotten my online from stocky's and I think two came from the bargain cave at cabelas.  The thumbhole does wonders to reduce perceived recoil, which would be good on a 300 win mag.  THe fit and finish is superb for the price.

I forgot to add that depending on you hand some won't feel as good as others.  My fingers and thumbs are shorter but thicker than average.  I have to becareful that my index finger rides the trigger at the right place.  Some thumbholes pull my hand too far back and I end up reaching for the trigger, its okay for target when I can think about it, but in a hunting situation you want it to fit.  If you can try out the stock or get measurements from one that feels right and compare them.  good luck

Thanks for the input, I've found the laminate ones seem to fit me better, than the molded ones because they have a larger thumbhole.
