How does the P85 or other P Series 9mm's handle lead bullets?
« on: December 22, 2009, 08:44:08 PM »
I bought a P85 MKII in 9mm and I really like it a lot.
It's pretty accurate and it has some fairly deep rifling in the barrel too.
If I shoot lead bullets through it will the barrel get all leaded up?
I'd rather not have to go through a lot of trouble to clean it out, but I have a bunch of lead ammo.
Has anyone tried shooting lead bullets in their P85, P89 or in any other P Series Ruger pistols?

I shoot lead in my P89 and P95 all the time with no leading problems.  As I understand it, most if not all leading problems can be eliminated with the correct lube, lead hardness, and velocity, so even if you do have some leading it can likely be corrected if you reload.

Thanks, maybe I should go ahead and try some then.
The ammo consists of commercial reloads.
What bullet lube can you or anyone suggest that might help?
Are you shooting hard cast reloaded bullets?

I use hard cast bullets in my reloads, but I don't (yet) cast my own, I'm using store-bought bullets.  As such, I don't have a lube recommendation since I use whatever is on the bullets I bought.  Chances are, your commercial reloads will be fine as they are - for that matter I don't think you could even add or change the lube on a bullet that's already loaded.

You might talk to the folks over in the Cast Bullet Discussion forum, there are some very knowledgeable posters in there who can likely answer any questions you might have.

If you have a little leading (or a lot even) get a Lewis Lead remover - I think Brownell's still offers them. I had a bunch of the swaged Speer 9mm bullets. I never found a load that didn't lead with those soft bullets.  But a few pulls of the lead remover through the barrel and I was good again.

What Shaner said -- my P95 handles Pb with no trouble.  Sometimes I make the loads so mild that the slide doesn't stay open after the last shot, and occasionally one of those practice loads will fail to feed, but that's just the result of my attempt to be frugal with propellant.  Any leading in the bore comes right out with a brush and little Hoppe's.

I own both a P-85 and a P-89. Both do well with my home cast boolits......but they need to be sized .357".
