How many of you use Varget?
« on: January 25, 2010, 02:52:37 PM »
I am thinking of trying Varget for my .223, my.243 and my 7MM-08. Is this a powder that works well in these calibers. The .243 is a H&R and the other two are bolt guns. Thanks, Don

I use it in my .308 and .45-70. Works like a champ!

It's a great powder IMO.

If you haven't looked at Reloader's Nest before, you might take a look at the recipes and accuracies for Varget in those calibers and compare it to the max loads at Hodgdons data site; lots of combinations of bullets and powders. I have found some hints on some winners there, but I still work up the loads. I look for the ones with published 3-shot accuracies.
Varget is supposed to be a winner in 1:12 223's and was adequate but not the best in my 1:9 223.

Works great in .308 and 30-30!  One of my favorites.

I'm getting ready to do some load testing for the .223 in a 15" Encore barrel and Varget is one of the powders I'll be using since I have it and also had many people tell me it works great in that cal.

I gotta back that up, works great in my 1-12 223, everything from 40grn v-max through 50grn spitzers, still trying more.

Was not satisfied with Varget in .243 , 7-08 , or 30-06.In .223 and .308 both I got exceptional groups.

It's my "go to" powder in rifle calibers.  I even got a good workup for my 45-70.  Very accurate in 243.  Been kinda' hard to find around here for a while..... :)

Varget shoots great in my AR 223 1 N 9 twist with 69 gr Match Kings. It is also the best in my 14" 6mm-225 Win Contender with Sierra 80 gr SSP bullet. It shoots great in my 30X47 HBR rifle with 168 Match Kings. In one of my M-96 Mauser Swede 6.5X55 rifles that I shoot matches with it does the best with 140 Sierra MK. I have noticed some difference between lot numbers though. When changing lot numbers you have to play with the load a little some times. The problem right now is finding some Varget. If you find some get a 8 lb jug.

Boy, wish I had known that, I stopped at two different stores over the weekend and they both had it.  I wasn't in need yet so didn't think anything of it.  I'm sure ol Mr. Murphy will show up later when I do need it, and I will run short.

Store I bought my rifle had three 8 pounders in Varget and said he had about 30 one pound cans. He also had primers and would sell them by the thousand. Don

Badnews Bob, that's going to be a fair drive for you :D.Penhook is just a stretch in the road ;D. There is a store in Rocky Mount Virginia, about 25 miles from Penhook. It's called Franklin outdoors. He has Varget and most powders for around 20.00 a pound. Primers are about 30.00 a thousand and 7 1/2 bench rest primers are 35.00, I think. He has Marlin XS7 and XL7 for 289.00 -Stevens for 310.00 in gray and 330.00 for camo, all plus tax. I will be visiting Wensday to stock up ;). Don

I've used Varget in my 22-250 with good results. I'm going to try it with my new 223 encore barrel. Localy Varget sells for $26.50 plus 6%tax. I also noticed its now higher priced in my Natchez catalog and the new Cabelas reloading catalog. Some of the other powders I use stayed the same price. So maybe being an extreem powder puts it in a new price range. ::)
