25-35 on an SB1 frame
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:29:39 AM »
I dont intend to try to make this a 25-06, but do you think the 25-35 can be stoked up to full loads with the heavier (say, 117s) in an SB1 frame without pressure problems. I believe the factory loads dont even make 30-30 pressures (because of the old guns/actions they may be fired in)and if the 25-35 is loaded to them would improve the performance considerably. Since the 30-30s have been on SB1s without trouble this shouldnt be a problem, but.......Whadayathink?

30-30s have never been factory offered on SB1 frames, but I don't see that it would be a problem, H&R just hasn't done the testing on them...yet, I don't see a problem with the 25-35 either as long as primer issues are taken into consideration.

I don't see a problem other than firing pin,and primer , as tim said H&R did fit 30-30 barrels on the
model 158 back in the 70's.  I saw a M158 with a 30-30 barrel Manf Date was AG 1970 last Saturday ata gun show.
Dumb ass did not buy it. (ME) It was in real good shape for a 40 yr. rifle Datil

Right Tim! When I said that I was thinking of the metalurgy of the previous frames used for 30-30, etc. and SB1's are the same material (if I understand this correctly). CWs experience with his 357Max leads me to believe my proposal is OK, though I would prefer an SB2 frame in any case. Most likely I will end up shooting considerably more cast bullets out of my 25-35 anyway, but if I wanted to switch over to some of those 'spaceships' (long, high BC, boat-tail bullets)  I could call it my 'Buck Rogers Raygun'.

My 25-35 is on a 1987 or '89 shotgun frame.  Mine isn't going to see anything above a factory load. Don't need anymore horsepower, I have a 25/06 if I feel more is needed. While technically not a SB1 its pretty close to one in strength. I feel plenty safe. As mentioned my factory maxi in a 158 has been just fine after many hundreds of near max loads of AA1680 powder.

CW, '87-'89 frames were SB1, for it to be a non-SB1 cast iron frame, it would have to be 1986 or older, H&R Inc went out of business in 1986.  ;)

Well guys, I just put it all together, a custom barrel on a '02 nickeled Topper Deluxe frame with a tight .001 headspace, uniform side to side. Nice lock up and with a stout load the WW lrg rifle primers flow only a little bit, nothing to be a concern as I can see.
Now the fun (or frustration?) starts, ie, shootin' groups.
