Anyone Experienced with Both H4831 & H4831SC??
« on: November 05, 2003, 01:39:01 AM »
Forum

I have loaded my 243 with H4831 for 20 years. The powder grains are long, fill the case, and have to be compressed a bit when seating a 100 gr bullet.  A few years back they came out with a "SC" (short cut) version of the 4831 powder to eliminate the problem with max loads and I am curious if anyone that has used both versions of this powder noticed any difference in performance, point of impact, consistency, etc. if you changed from one to the other.

Thanks for any feedback.

I haven't tried them both, but I have tried other stick powders. The short cut equivalent is the way to go because SC is easier to work with. It just meters out uniformly. With 4831SC, groups are 1" at 100 yards from my 270 that I bought new. What could be better?

I have shot 4831/4831sc in both my 25-06 and my 280. same groups, same loads , no adjustments necessary. In fact I have found H4831 to be one of the most consistent powders I have ever used. I have used the WWII surplus/ 4831 (1970's) to present shortcut and have not had to adjust my loads at all

I currently load my 243 with that same powder.  I started with the original H4831 and now use the SC version.  No changes whatsoever.

I load several different cartridges with both, actually all three as I have some original surplus 4831 that is still good.  I use H4831SC in a M70 .243 with excellent results.  With 100 gr Hornady SPBTs I use 49 gr for 3011 fps without compression.  With newly manufacured H4831 I was hard pressed to get 47 gr in the case with that bullet without considerable compression.  H4831SC is the best choice for the .243.  In other cases where I could get the same amount in I could not discern any difference between H4831 and H4831SC.  Chronograph readings are compareable and pressure signs are the same.  So far I have used H4831SC in the .243, 6.5x55, 6.5x280, 7x57, .280 and the 30-06. Accuracy has always been excellent in all of them.
