Latch question

The latch on my rifle is engaging the entire crossways direction of the barrel lug, but appears to be only going up the lug about 1/16".  Is this the proper fit?  Asking as I had a "pop-open" last week in the rain and haven't had time to get back out and shoot.

That would be less than minimum, there are pics in the barrel fitting info of 2007 and 2008 factory fitted barrels thru the inspection port on a couple of my guns to give you an idea of what it should be.

If it doesn't pop open when dry and shoots good, I'd try to keep it dry, I've hunted in drenching rain with a flintlock using a cow's knee, so a modern rifle should be easy to keep dry.  Otherwise you can send it back to H&R to be fitted if it's a factory fitted barrel or read the barrel fitting instructions in the FAQs if you want to do it yourself.

I am loathe to send any gun anywhere these days, and especially one that shoots well. With my one rifle that popped occassionally I did stone the shelf and got in the habit of wiping the shelf clean before and after use (redundant, I know, but it works for me) and when closing I do so briskly. Now I know the sound and feel of it locking up well and through use it has become much better. In fact, I cant remember it popping open for a fair long time. I suspect that a tight headspace gun (a good thing) may do this when new more than a loose headspace gun.
Snap it closed with some vigor, it wont hurt it.
