Carring Concealed on hikes?
« on: December 14, 2009, 04:19:37 AM »
I've just started hiking and love the Sipsey Wilderness area here in Alabama. Great trails with beautiful waterfalls and wildlife galore. Not into hunting anymore but I do carry concealed, got my permit, wherever I'm at but not so sure about management areas. Got signs posted saying no guns, bows or dogs without a permit. Haven't talked with a Ranger yet but wondered what I need to do about carring concealed. Anybody have any info on this?

Sounds like you have a permit to me.  Guess that would be my answer, "Yes Mr. Ranger I do have a permit"  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

It's probably safe to assume the Rangers don't do random pat-down searches on hikers.  So if it's concealed who will know you have it?

Wellll, I heard their is one that's trying to make a name for himself. Heard he's searching backpacks and all. Course I haven't ran into him it's just 2nd hand info but from a pretty good source.

Another example of Big Brother needlessly intruding in our lives.

Sad that this kind of conduct is becoming so commonplace.  Sadder still is that they get away with treating people without any respect.

The laws of search and seizure used to be taken seriously by the courts, but our constitutional rights continue to erode.

Just as an aside, and certainly not related to a Government Ranger searching backpacks, motorcycle gangs have been known to carry rattlesnakes in their saddlebags to deter unwanted intrusion!

Definitely NOT legal here in Bama in WMAs to carry a loaded gun of any sort in your vehicle nor to have one outside of legal hunting seasons. Me I go nowhere without one. Just don't get caught they will burn you big time.

Andrew,

Listed under "IT SHALL BE UNLAWFUL:" Note #22 of the BLACK WARRIOR WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA (Hunting Regulations – August 1, 2009 – July 31, 2010) Season Permit:

"22. Nothing in this regulation prohibits or requires a wildlife area permit for the possession of handguns by lawfully licensed persons for personal protection, provided the handguns are not used to hunt or take or to attempt to take wildlife except as otherwise provided by this regulation."

It sure doesn't say that on the CWMA permit or any other I've ever held in my hands. Now I fess up I've never been up to Black Warrior and never to my knowledge held the map/permit for there.

I do agree that SHOULD BE on all WMAs but get caught in any of them I visit and you be in a heap of hurt.
