wyoming black bear hunters

As usual I am right on top of things
I would really like to get a bear one of these days, We hunt elk around
Meadowlark, have for the past 20-odd years. Never seen any real bear sign
1-2 tracks in 20 yrs. Anyone have any expierience with the Buffalo end of the
BigHorns? Don't want to steal your spot, just a clue where to start.
If I'm wasting my time on this area where would you suggest?

   WH..I hunted bears in the Bighorns one spring...never had any luck...doesn't mean they are not there though...I took a couple up near Dubois..with a pal that lived in town...lately I have been hunting over west of Jackson...it seems like there are quite a few bear in that area, but so far I haven't been successful....but I haven't hit it as hard as I did in Dubois...I was a whole lot younger then too.  One of the guys here in town has killed three or four up near Jackson, and my dentist has slain a bunch....but I think he calls...he is pretty quiet aboutwhere he goes.... I saw a lot of sign on LaBonte creek on Laramie peak.  I think to be sure of getting one you about have to bait which takes a lot of time and effort. My boss used to bait in Alaska. He swore by used grease from restrants.

If you can learn about areas known to be deer or elk calving areas, then I would register a bait site near there. Its been awhile, but I think dates for registering bait sites is sometime in early April, at the Game and Fish office in the area you want a bait site. Stalking spring bear without a bait site is almost a waste of time in Wyoming, unless you know of an area of major winter ungulate death.

  bearmgc,, has some good points about bait, but as far as Laramie Peak, while there might be bear and lots of them, if you go the bait route, try for an area that doesn't fill out quickly...Here in the Snowy Rg. and Serria Madre range, there are bear, but once the animals start moving they fill the quota so quickly that many are left with much work and the season closes before they really get to hunt....

I live in Buffalo, grew up in Greybull and have hunted the Bighorns my whole life.  There are more bears up there than you think.  I do the vast majority of my elk hunting on the Greybull side of the hill still and we see bears most years.  I have several friends that bait in that area and are usually successful.  I also remember that this past summer there was a rash of bear break-ins in houses and cabins near Story, so that might be a good place to poke around this spring.  I definitely don't think you would be wasting your time hunting bear in the Buffalo area.

  307, that could be excellent adv ice....I only tried he Bighorns once...I do know for my money, putting out bait in an area that closes quickly is a lot of work that leads to nothing...I haven't kept up with the Bighorns and how quickly the quota is filled...it is a beautiful area....we are seriously considering a move to the Lovell - Powell area to get away...from southern Wy....But the guys that hunt the area west of Jackson do very well..neither bait...one just glasses, and he has taken I believe 4 bear...the other has taken about 20, but he calls at least some of the time...fun hunting spring bear and a beautiful time of the year.....
