Nikon has a fine crosshair reticle on their scopes. They have various grades and cover the magnification you called out.I just bought one of their 6X24 Monarchs with the BDC reticle.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

;) Slickest, if you are looking for a dog scope...I would be looking at something about 14 power....max...I have 3  Leupold 6.5-20's in the cabinet because they collect too much heat even in the winter...I have shot dogs for about 40 years, unless something really new has come along 12 or 14 is about the max. pratical for the prairie...I really like burris 4.5 to14...this am I shot a coyote at 519  yards with it..the Balistic Plex is great for this kind of shooting...Nikon may have something similar. or you may want to check out target knobs for p. dogs...you have time to adjust there...with coyotes it is shoot now or loose out....

You can get a VariX or VX-II for about $500.  I've recently become enamored with weaver classic V 4x16 x42, FC, AO.  I have it on a 17HMR.  I think I paid in the low $300s for it about a year ago.
