model 60
« on: April 30, 2012, 04:50:18 PM »
I know the model sixty smith is a mainstay in the concealable handgun catagory but full house 357's are a bit rough to fire. What I'm looking for is a good protecion  38 special round on the market any one have a preference for this little smith? This is my wifes gun and she is looking for a lighter protection round she can shoot for practice and protection. Yes I reload for it also but I want to purchase a box or two just for her to know the recoil and accuracy of what she carries in it on her day to day routine. I will probably lean toward the hornady 110 gr critical defense ammo.

I think you're on the right track. That's what I keep in my taurus 85 lightweight. Recoil is very mild as opposed to a 158 gr. 38.  I shoot the 110 gr but the 125 gr is very managabel . If you reload, the xtp is available in 110 and 125 and you can load it to suit your needs.

You could also try some Remington Golden Sabres, 125gr hp in 357.  They are midrange, sort of between a full house 357 and a 38spec PlusP.  I think the velocity is around 1100fps where the full house is about 1300 and the PlusP is 900 ( I may be a bit off but not by much).  I find them quite manageable to shoot in my 3" M60.

there are several 130 gr rounds for the 38 spl short bbl guns that are made for the 1.8 or 2 inch J frams . They even have reduced recoil. She can the use the 130 gr FMJ for pratice , a cost effective round
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

My Model 60 likes the Federal 110gr  hollow points.. Good personal defense load.. My wife has shot the 60 with Remington wad cutters and had a lot of fun.. Accurate and easy to shoot.. Good luck....

I've been really impressed with the acuracy of this little handgun. I can ring my 25 yrd  8" ringer all five shots with 148 gr wadcutters. I guess I was expecting alot less acuracy even double action I can still hit the 25 yrd ringer. Wife likes it also just something about a revolver simple point and pull the trigger, No cocking racking a slide or saftey just squeeze if your rushed for time. She likes my low recoil lead loads at 3 grains of bullseye., should be loafing along about 600 fps.

Some yrs. ago a cop on stakeout in a store was shot in his vest by by a robber, he returned fire with his duty gun and his backup gun, one in each hand hitting the perp 11 times, which led to this pistol shoot. 2 M 60s that you'd never seen before and store bought ammo you knew nothing about, standing , a loaded 60 in each hand at 25 ft. a silhouette target with a 3x5 card in the center of chest became visible for 2 seconds, your job, hit it 10 times.   There was 6 M60s and over 500 shooters.  The guns we shot later became the prizes. I've carried the M60, that i won, ever since.  I put 7 in the card, one in his crotch, one in the shoulder and one missed by about 1/2".  I love the M60.  I also have a 3" and a 5" adjustable sighted. 10 shots in 2 seconds is about as fast as I could pull the trigger.

I have a 60 pro with the 3" barrel and I seem to remember some where they do not recomend going below 125 grains with full power loads.  I shoot the 125 XTP with a reduced load of 6 gr. of win 231 and find this is a nice reduced load. I have never shot over crono. I reread my manual and saw that the warning was for mag. loads in the TI alloy framed guns and less than 120 gr. was the cut off.

Ihave a 642, 2" that I keep loaded with the Speer 135 grain gold dot +P short barrel.  Out of the 642 it chronographs in the low 900's, in my 4" model 15, upper 900's.  It has a good "street rep".  For your wife I would suggest practice with the wadcutters and for defense, loading with the most effective .38 round.
