45-70 Double Tap....
« on: March 03, 2010, 06:33:05 AM »
Has anyone shot these? used them on hogs? I'm looking for a factory load that will give me a pass-thru everytime as we hunt in the pine trees and blood is hard to find there. I'll admit that the factory Remington 405 gr load crushed my pigs shoulder and split his heart in two(Being as how it's my first pig,I'm not sure how hard that is,but it did),but I really want an exit hole, too

Interested in the 405 gr moving at 1800 fps and carrying 2914 ft/lbs...seems like just the ticket at $37.95 a box
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

I use the Buffalo Bore 430gr at 1925fps and 100% pass through would depend on how deep the hogs are stacked but two at a time should be no problem. I did shoot a brown bear from under his chin to out just above his tail with a 350gr at 1880fps

I have taken two hogs/one shot on two occasions.    the first time was Winchester 300 gr HP at 1800.    distance was 82 yds.   Just under the ear of a 280 lb hog and into the shoulder of a 75 lb pig on the other side.    the second time was two pigs lined up perfectly for a head shot.  using 300 grain hardcast 44 mag out of my ruger carbine.    havent chronyd the load but I guesstimate it being 1600fps.    distance was 35 yds and got two pass throughs just under the ear on both.

I havent used the heavier loads on the 4570 yet but will start this year.

If you want a pass thru on hogs, try the Hornady 350 RN

That should do it, however I agree the 350 Hornady is a better choice, good penetration and expansion.

A 405gr FN going 1450fps will penetrate 8 feet of meat
The faster it is from that the less meat penetration you get.

I have shot two elk and 4 deer with a 45-70 all but one of them were shot with 400 gr bullets at around 13 to 1400 fps.  All bullets went kleen through.  The one elk that was not shot with a 400 gr cast bullet was shot with a 500 gr Lyman cast bullet over 65 gr of FFG.  The bullet hit the animal in the butt and came out the chest after penetrating the entire length of the animal.  Velocity was around 1125 fps.  I did load up some bear stomping loads for my Marlin 95.  These were loaded with Remington Soft points and 54 gr of IMR 4895 for about 1850 fps.  They were really hard on my shoulder during sight in.  I never shot a bear with that load but I did shoot and elk.  It was a broadside shot and I drove the slug through both front shoulder joints.  Both ere stattered and the bullet exited leving something like a fist size hole.  The animal was DRT.

420 gr gas checked, hard cast loads at 1750 fps will go slam through a feral hog at 75 yards.

And then through a good sized pine tree.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
