30-30 to 30-40 krag Handi-rifle
« on: January 24, 2010, 08:49:27 AM »
How difficult would it be to convert a 30-30 barrel to 30-40 Krag in a Handi-rifle? and if it is difficult who would you recommend as a qualified gun smith. I really like the 30-40 Krag and have an old Krag but would like to retire it and replace it with a single shot NEF.

It isn't difficult at all. Rent the reamer: http://4-dproducts.com/display.php?group=Rifle+Calibers

Any smith can do the job, or else you can do it yourself. You can actually hand turn the reamer with a tap stock if you go very carefully.

Wayne York can do it for you, and probably has a Krag reamer:

Just wondering: What is the point of going from 30-30 to 30-40?

Igm270 I just like the round already have two 30-30's, two 308 win, 30-06 several other calibers and I have 10 boxs of 30-40 Krag to reload so I think it would be just fun to retire the Krag and go single shot and work up some loads for it.

And that's all the reason you need.

Converted mine to a .30-40 Krag about a year ago...bought the reamer and plunged in. I bought a fiinish reamer and actually, if I had thought twice about it I would have bought the .30-40 AI instead of the standard .30-40..the Ackley Improved lets you shoot standard .30-40 rounds or fireform AI rounds.

In the single shot handi rifle (as long as you've got the SB2 receiver, you can load your Krags quite a bit hotter than you can in a Springfield Krag rifle. Be careful. I'll not pass on loads here, but they are out there for the Krag for single shot Ruger, TC contender, and other single rifles chambered for the Krag (these loads specifically tell you do not load for the Springfield Krag)

I did end up having to polish the chamber using FLitz and a case I attached to a threaded rod (with power drill)to get the rounds to eject properly after firing. Works perfectly now, and is a powerful 150-175 yard gun now with 180 and 200 grain bullets usuable.

Took a deer this year with the Handi rifle at 150 yards up hill.
