CVA octagon barrels and across the flats differences?
« on: February 03, 2010, 06:59:13 PM »
I am working on buying used CVA parts to put together a few rifles. Is there any information out that would let me know what parts are interchangeable.I'm talking the old sidelock percussion or flint rifles.
Also need to know what barrel, across the flats measurements, are from CVA.I am sure that at onetime I came across information that had the differences in the barrels.I just can't find it now that I need it.
If I remember correctly,it gave measurements for 2 or 3 muzzle loader companies.Length, across the flats and I think breech plug size.

Yer askin some pretty broad questions,,tough to answer.
The spanish makers made lot's of different style guns,,and different makes, Ardesa, CVA, Traditions, Jukar and a few off brands.

Some had hooked breech, some had tang breech. The locks look the same but they drilled the stock bolt holes in different places. Problems with swappin barrels is the lug location and the rail length, tang length. Alot of custom fitting can be done, it's not all that hard to do, but the only way to find out is to have "hands on" and try it, or ask for specific measurements before ya buy.

It's easyier to say, I want to find parts for a CVA Mountain rifle, or a St. Louis Hawkin, or a Kentucky ;)

Thought for certain I had come across something that said what rifles had what.I know not everything will line up from different models using the same basic barrel.I would have to reposition somethings and fill dovetails. It just seems to be the only way a guy can fix-up some of the old models.
I always thought the Traditions rifles looked exactly like most CVA's.Did they get the tooling from CVA?

When CVA stopped making their "traditional" line of ML's a few years back now, Yes, Traditions did buy their line of patterns. And Deer Creek Products makes/sells CVA stuff. You can even get new barrels for CVA from them.
Before that it's just a simple matter that the same maker in Spain made guns for both brands, with only slight cosmetic differances for each.
But again it's really hard to say what will fit what,,I've done a bunch of that myself through the years. With the Kentucky, beit CVA, Traditions, Jukar they all seem to mix-n-match.
But with the others there is usually just enough differance, ta make ya say, "Aw Darnit!" or another explicitive.
Some of the early Ardesa had some top notch barrels and locks, they still make target/bench quality rifles for the European market but their not sold in the USA.

It's not hard to believe that somebody has done the work to put together a list like you're talking about, but I've never seen it.   I have the resources to assemble a list of specs like that for TC and CVA, but not any interest in taking the time to do it.   Since your talking CVA your best bet is probably going to be to call Deer Creek and ask them.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
