Matthew Thomas Jansen, 30, was shot about 7 a.m. Sunday by his hunting partner, a 28-year-old Orange man, said Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Robert Morgan. The shooting appears to be accidental, officials said.

Morgan would not identify the Orange man.

“It’s such a traumatic experience for him and all,” Morgan said Monday.

The hunting partners were at compartment 17 of the South Bayou Unit of the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area when they began shooting simultaneously at ducks. The Orange man is believed to have fired at his hunting partner in attempt to shoot the ducks, said Morgan.

The Orange man has not been charged. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.

Yep I saw that Mark, A terrible thing, My little brother almost did that same thing to me in the 70's.

We were swinging right to left and I was on the left side of the blind and shot. When I turned to see why he didn't I was looking down the barrel of his double 410. It physically made me ill... then mad! Ya gotta be careful, close quarters or not!  :o

It is such a tragic thing when a hunting accident occurs.  I recall one a couple of years ago when an older gent laid his rifle across the roof of his jeep and fired on some feral hogs.  Just because one can see clearly through a scope, doesn't necessarily mean that the muzzle is clear from obstructions.  Unfortunately in this case the muzzle was not clear and the shot sent a bullet down through the Jeep roof killing his granddaughter sitting inside.  We just can not be too careful.

Definitely worth repeating!

I knew to twin brothers in Nederland, Texas. One had a disfigured leg and limped severely, We got to talking one day and it came out that one had accidentally shot the other during a dove hunt, while crossing a fence! A small insignificant event left life long marks, physically and mentally for both.

Crossing a fence.  There have been a bunch injured when crossing fences with loaded guns, or falling out of tree stands.
