new to hunting in pa.

What do you have to do to hunt with pistol, is there another stamp you have to get or a test you have to take.

No but you need a sportsman permit or a concelled carry permit to carry a pistol

I live in ohio,i have my ohio conceal but pa. Doesnt recognize Ohio unless you send in for it

Well if you have non res.lic.all you would really need is sportsmans permint use to be $6.00 for 5 years to carry any pistol,but if you have con.carry it might be legal in Pa.to carry.

one other thing worth mentioning about using a pistol in western pa even if you meet all other regs: stay out of allegheny county with it.  it ain't legal and neither are centerfire rifles.  shotgun, bow, or muzzleloader only.

As far as i know nothing additional would be needed to use a pistol during deer or bear season. as long as you buy your hunting liscence that is all that is needed. I hunt in both tioga and bradford county and several people i know use pistols there for deer.

Deerhunter you do need a sportsmans pistol permit or a con.weapons permit to carry a pistol legally in Pa.I've been carrying for years.

Dave you are correct. I quess being I never went hunting with a pistol I never looked hard in the book at it to notice the information. You learn something new every year.

Jason , no ones mentioned it....but you refered to a " pistol ".....In Pa your handgun must be < think they call it > mechanical action ??  In other words no semi-autos.  A revolver or single shot ( as in Contender )  Theres no caliber limits only your moral or eithical values. ( of course must be center fire )And as others have eluded to...must have the permit , either sportsmans or ccw .  Its a great sport , I've been a handgunner for a dozen years now. Doubt I'll ever carry a rifle again....but practice , and practice a lot.  Good Luck

     You can use rimfire for small game and turkey in certain areas,and yes no semi's in Pa.

Yep , sorry , Dave......I had deer on the brain.   Indeed , a .22 handgun in late October sitting under a cluster of oaks and hickories ....taking a snooze.....or rather hunting  ;)

A Sportsmans Permit or LTCF isn't needed if you walk from your home to your hunting spot and DO NOT conceal the gun.

A SP or LTCF is only needed if you conceal the handgun or transport it in a vehicle.

Manually operated handguns are legal for hunting so long as you abide by the centerfire/rimfire rules for certain game - so no stamps are needed.   The only issue is carrying/transporting of a handgun.  If carried openly and you never get in/on a vehicle - no license/permit is needed.

The Sportsmans Permit is only $6 or $7 and issued by the county treasurer.  It is only good during hunting, fishing, trapping, and dog training.   The LTCF is $20, issued by the Sheriff, requires a background check, and is good for all lawful purposes.   No reason not to get the LTCF really..   ...its a get out of jail free card just incase you accidentally transport your handguns if you're the type that doesn't carry for protection.
