Depended greatly on the season, market year, etc. If you are asking about last season, then I only averaged $10.00 in the Southeast corner of NE. But, typically our "yotes" run a little smaller, a little redder in color, and generally much darker in coloration than the Western and Northern sections of this same state. Also just coming off of a rather bad stint of mange in the areas I trap. Last year was first in several that I didn't have to throw any away. 3 years ago I didn't have ANY that I could save, either. I've also heard some averages paid last year around $18 and couple of $20's in this corner of the state. The $32 that you quoted is very high...so I am assuming that you either did not sell to a local country buyer or you live in Western or extreme Northern section of state from me.
I haven't heard of $32 averages around here since the "boom" years and even then it was hard to do that (low animal numbers, very high competition, etc.).

Last year, here in KY they averaged around 25 $. Although I did see some go 30$ and even as low as 15$. It usually depends on how well they are handled and primeness of course.
Trapping ain't a sport; It's a way of life

you mean my "ex" buyer?!!!!
I have been shopping around a little anyway lately. He's a good guy and all, and did treat me well for years. But last several years seemed like he was on a kick to "not get burned" after some losses he took on speculations in prior years.
I know markets were very low in recent years, but one should never average $3 on finished, prime coon. Kicker was when I held back half of exactly same grades...then sold him first half one weekend and averaged $3 on the lot, then took second half in several weeks later through a friend (I didn't go along) and my friend averaged $15 on my coons. Both groups had similar grades, sizes, etc. I really mixed em up before I separated two groups out of them and tried this.
needless to say I was more than a little hurt and discouraged by my findings.

thanks for the info, too.
More I think about it, I remember making sure that both groups of coons had same number of slights, larges, #1s and #2s, etc. and I really would not expect the AVERAGES to be that much of a variance. Only difference that I could tell was "who brought them in the door" each time. I really think it was personal, but for life of me I cannot recall ever doing anything or saying anything offensive to him. I always shot the bull with him, gladly accepted the prices he paid me in low market years with full understanding of his situation, etc.
I do recall a period of couple of years that both of us had a common friend. This other friend and I did have a falling out of sorts, and unfortunately that other friend also went to work as a skinner/grader for the buyer for couple of years. I speculate that this other friend may have undone my years of good relationship with my buyer.
I am considering shipping in future years...but this year I only get one full week only to trap. I am not anticipating a big catch in yotes this year...one week is not enough time to trap coyotes in my opinion. I am going to hammer the greasy old coons, rats, mink, and hope for couple of fox or coyotes to keep my land trapping interests there for this year. Next year hopefully will be able to allocate more vacation time than what I am able to do this year.
Will be in touch more later...am anxious to see how you fare in the shipping world this year plus how your season goes. Go get 'em!

just lost my one week to trap now. if I get out at all may only be from a Friday to a Monday and sometime in December at that. Oh well, you take what you can get, right???
Keep me posted on how you do and perhaps I can live out my "line" vicariously through your shared experiences this year.

Jim

Sorry to hear you lost your week to trap.  Work/bills/life seem to get in the way when it comes to hunting and trapping.  I am hoping to take a week off starting a week from this friday.  It's early but our deer rifle season starts November 7th and I will have to pull most of my traps for that.  Going to give the coon grief for a week then maybe take another week off after deer rifle season is over for coyote, mink and late coon (if the coon are still on the move ).

Hopefully you can work more trapping time in.  I do enjoy your posts/replies and get a lot out of them.  You and the others that take the time to share your wealth of experience is very much apperciated.  Just would like to take the time to thank you and them since I know I will benefit much from the great advice given here in the short time I get to trap.  You guys just might make a trapper out of me yet!!    Thanks again!!

Tim

Hey wacky,  been lurkin here every once in awhile, been busy with harvest season, and getting the line scouted out for coon,  she's ready to go now.  Season opens saturday, got some friends coming from Utah on monday to pheasant hunt, so i will be busy skinin coon, and pheasant huntin next week.   Almost forgot, got a new puppy on sunday, she's a real pretty walker,  my friends from Utah are bringing back a redtick pup for me, so this spring and summer i will be busy training those pups.   Take care of yourself, and have a good safe season.   Corey

nafa contact would be great.
looking more and more like I won't get out at all this season. not necessarily a bad thing though. got a promotion at work and just need to spend a great deal of time there to learn while my manager is still here until year-end. Once he is gone it is my show to run. just need to be in his hip pocket for awhile learning whatever I can glean from his mind, that's all.
may try a little calling later in year to keep my sanity, though. The first couple weeks of trapping opener was always how I recharged my batteries, so to speak. Can't recall the last time I didn't plant steel in a season, and the thought of that has been a little bit of an adjustment. But, its all for the better in the long run, right?
