357 Maximum Lever Action
« on: February 04, 2010, 06:09:03 PM »
Does anyone know if a "major" manufacturer ever made a rifle
chambered for the 357 maximum cartridge? If so, where can it
be obtained and what type of game would this cartridge in
a rifle quite easily take?

Thanks,

The simple answer is no.  In a rifle, the Maxi would be just behind the .35 Remington in power yet would require an action of virtually the same length to function.  Manufacturers simply bypass the Maxi and chamber the much more common Remington.

Howdy,
I've often wondered if the Winchester M94 .357 Magnum guns could be rechambered and have the lifter modified for the longer cartridge. The action is long enough. Looks like a reasonable bit of gunsmithing to accomplish the feat.

A competent smith might be able to do something like that in the Model 94. The shell "carrier" I doubt would be the problem in that long an action. It would be more about the timing on lowering the lever, shell feed.
Given the size of the Model 94, and the size of the 357 mag OR max, it would seem a sloppy fit for the two. I have heard mixed reviews on the mating of the rifle and the 357 magnum. I doubt a maximum would be much different.
