Author Topic: Is a barrel that is EXACTLY 16" legal to use as a carbi (Read 819 times)

I just bought a T/C Custom Shop 22 mag. barrel from a well known net dealer, and when it arrived I measured it to make sure it was 16 " before putting it on a receiver w/ sholder stock. The barrel is exactly 16", not 16.25" as I had thought it would be. So my question is "What is the law on the minimum legal length, and is my new 16.00" barrel ok to mount with a shoulder stock? Thanks for any help with this question. :?

Minimum barrel length of 16" withan overall length of at least 28" (I believe). Someone correct me if I am wrong on the minimum OAL. Sean

Just checked out the ATF's web site & minimums are bbl = 16inches
overall length must be 26". My Contender Carbine with 16.25inch barrel has an overall length of 30inches. With a youth stock would be shorter but still meet the requirements.

Thak you all for the quick responses. I'd thought 16" would be legally safe, but then why did all the other 16" barrels I've owned come 1/4" over that minimum 16". :roll:

Not to convolute the issue but I believe the 26" overall measurement has to do with a folding stock on the rifle and that is the minimum required with the stock folded. Going on memory here as I don't have the Fed regs here. I researched it and was concerned years ago because I have an original Choate folder for the TC (no it is not for sale). If I recall correctly the minimum was set to allow M1A1 carbines to be legal when folded. Anyone got the reg handy? I have it at home and will look it up tonight if not.
