A little light reading:  http://www.egr.uh.edu/me/ceramics/3445LabManual/6.CHARPY.pdf

"The Charpy Impact Test
An impact test can be used to assess a material’s fracture resistance. Several such tests have
been devised although in the United States the Charpy Impact Test is the one most widely
used. ...."

Can't access the link, but I got "fracture resistance" alright....we aren't going to have projectiles bouncing back at us, are we? Or will this be a test, like safety glass? I can see it all now...."While testing the "fracture resistance" of the block of "hard rubber", CW was gored by his own returning projectile. He is expected to recover nicely, and made this statement from his easy chair..."Wow, Dude, sure didn't see that coming! It was a great shot, but the return.....not so much!"".    Just kidding!!    BoomLover

Cat, might I suggest a nice relaxing hour or two in an unlit cubicle, wearing the latest ' de rigueur ' sleeved waistcoats............with fastenings to the rear of course, sipping a PFIZER mild green cocktail, while admiring the restfull tropical fish displayed on the shatterproof vid screen.  What are you going on about man ?  " Charpy notch test "  you made that up. :P

Hmmm.  http://www.egr.uh.edu/me/ceramics/3445LabManual/6.CHARPY.pdf   worked for me this AM.

This is the test of metal that, to me, indicates it's usefullness as a cannon barrel.  It's ability to withstand fracture when stressed.

Someday I'd like to chart the values for 1018, 1024, 1045 and 4130, 4140 and a few others.

Someday.
