SP 101 .22LR

Recently picked up a Ruger SP 101 in .22 LR with the 4" barrel.  Just wondering if anyone has any experience with one of these revolvers, and if there are any loads that have shot better than others in your gun.  I'm also kind of curious what kind of accuracy I can expect out of this gun.  I would like to do some squirrel hunting with it if I can shoot it well enough.

I doubt if you will tweak squirrel hunting accuracy, but you might. You have just bought a relatively rare and very durable handgun. Don't sell it unless you sell it to me.

Nope, they've been discontinued now for several years. They bring about $550 so if you got it for less than that, you did good. I too doubt you'll get any kind of hunting accuracy out of it. It would be better for running a trap line. I had two of them and would rather have made a profit than continuing ownership.

I thought they were bringin in a good bit now that they are no longer made.  It is a rock solid gun, especially for a rimfire revolver.  I will say I paid less than $300, so I guess I did pretty good.  Flash, did you notice any better accuracy with a certain ammo?

I tried everything i had but still no hunnting accuracy. Two more inches of barrel and elevation adjustment on the rear sight and I'd still have them. You did extremely good but don't expect to get more than $550, unless you find someone desperate for one.

I have one. A gift from a friend so I'll not sell it. When they do come up for sale they usually go for about $500-550 like Flash said.

Mine shoots very well but I've never really tried to see how much I could get out of it accuracy wise. I mostly use it for plinking with federal bulk-pack 22HPs. My old eyes can't shoot open sights well enought for squirrel hunting anymore.

I had one handed down to me last year when my step-father passed away, what a nice little .22LR.   Never tried to shoot it for accuracy, mainly use it for critter patrol when the dog starts barking.  I kicked around punching it out to .22 Mag, like my Redhawk in .357, built with overkill.  I may still do it, I just hate to do that to something that isn't made anymore, besides, can shoot them .22LR's all day for nuttin'.

Yes Gary, I even bought the reamer to rechamber it to magnum but just hated to alter it. I have a old K22 that I may ream out to magnum instead but their getting up there in value too.  :)

Wish I could get Ruger to sell me another cylinder, I would love to ream it.  All Ruger would do for me is told me I would have to send the gun back and they would replace the cylinder, but I wouldn't be able to keep both. :-[

I have one with the 4" barrel also.
Great on cans at 50' or so never really tried to put groups on paper with it.
Did put a set of Hogue grips on mine and gave it a trigger job with a Wolff spring kit, greatly improved my ability to kill cans.

I'm not home to double check but I believe it's HKS 22-J this should be the midway link. They work great I have 4 or 5.
