.327 Mag CARBINE
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:33:58 AM »
I am on a thinking project.
I have become enamored with the .327mag and I am thinking about taking a old 30/30 beater I have and making it too accept and fire this pistol cartridge. It is a lever action Winchester.
Is it a doable project?

I hope you have DEEP pockets, and access to special parts.

Obviously, you'll need a $400 custom barrel - since AFAIK, no one is making a .327 bbl for the Win 94.

Then, you'll need a model 1892's 32-20 magazine tube/spring/follower/endplug  adapted to the 94 action, to hold the smaller diameter cartridges.

Then, a .357 Model 94 lifter (which is different than the .30-30 lifter) would most likely also need modification(s).

IMHO, You'd end up with over $1K in a $250 rifle - but, then, how do you put a price tag on "fun" ?   ;D

If you simply want to have a .327 rifle, I would just buy a Marlin .32H&R and have it rechambered - which would give you virtually a modern .32-20 in performance.

Fun planning is not very costly---it is when you get to the point where you say "hold my beer and watch this" that it gets out of hand.
I have been known to do such. :)
Wonder could you punch out the .32 too accept .327 mags? Nope. Don't want a single shot.
Hummmmm
More interesting by the day---I still think the 94 would be a hoot and a good hog gun.
gotta be careful not to dwell on this too long at a time. :D

The real problem is the extensive mods to get the short pistol caliber round to function in the 94's 30-30 length action Is it possible, yes.. They 94 was produced in 44 mag and the length differences between the 44 and the 327 are much less. The cartridge guides would be custom propositions and that can get pricey in a big hurry if having it built. A 32-40 or 32 Special would be a lot asier but I understand the quest. A Marlin 1894 would be much simpler to do as they were made in a caliber that's close so alterations would be less.. and no custom barrel to buy(make). Luck!!
