.460 Handi Rifle - Poor Man's TC Katahdin .460
« on: February 05, 2010, 11:07:38 AM »
Hey All,

Just sealed the deal on a H&R Handi 45LC rechambered to take .460 S&W, .454 Casull, .45 Schofield and .45 Long Colt.

Any suggestions on a .454 Casull round to shoot through it?

I sold Momma's 30/30 for Christmas $$$, so I am thinking she can shoot a .45 LC or Schofield in this.

Gonna put some glass on it too... Ideas???

I am looking to get some Buffalo Bore 360's and this will be a good companion to my Alaskan .454 - Too Hot maybe?

He swares that he has run some Hornady 200 Grain Jelly Tips through it....

Let me know your thoughts!!!

Congrats! I've run the Hornady 200gr FTX thru my 460S&W Carbine barrel, they run just under 2900fps, accuracy wasn't the best tho 2-3" 100yd groups. The 250gr SST ML bullet handloads w/Lil'gun did about the same at 2600fps, maybe a just a bit better. Next load I work with will be 2400 and the SST or 240gr XTP Mag.

No plans to, the 45-70 handles the bigger stuff better.  ;)

Thanks all, since it is a 45LC Conversion, any concerns with "Hot Loads" in .454?

Any issues with running these through the Handi?

Double Tap .454 Casull Wide Flat Nose Gas Check Hardcast - other than a cleaning issue?

I have been cautioned not to use these in either my Handi or my Ruger Alaskan...

Thanks!

Where did you find that at?
It kind of looks familar.
I've kind of been thinking about one of those.

The Handi is factory chambered in 270Win and 500S&W, both have comparable breech thrust to the Casull, so I wouldn't be concerned about any factory ammo.

This rifle chambered for the .460S&W would seem like the ultimate in versatility!  Too bad you couldn't use a .410 shotgun shell in it. (I guess you could if you could find some 2 in. or 2.5in shells)
