760 remington barrel change
« on: March 09, 2012, 06:16:12 PM »
I want to change out the barrel on a 760. I want to put on a shorter barrel in the same cal. 30-06 how hard will this be??? As this barrel is not a threaded on barrel how would you head space it ?

Why don't you just cut the barrel and re-drill it for the front sight?
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

Its been probably 10 yrs since I took a barrel off a 760- its not hard-they are not threaded- Search the internet for disassembling the remington 760- I just remember what I had to do- I had found how to do it- and it wasnt to hard.

you will need a chamber cutter for 30.06 to adjust headspace they run over 100 bucks, then the heading gauges is around the same if i were you I'd check into going to see a gunsmith or send it back to Remington and have them install new barrel

The barrel screws into the barrel extension . This is where headspacing is adjusted , when a new barrel is installed . Shortening your barrel is much more cost effective replacing it . You can pick up another 760 barrel , if you want a full length one too . Remington will not do any work to model 760s , haven't for years !

the barrel don't screw into a 7600, its held on the receiver by the for end tube, if you unscrew that you can take the barrel off, you will need to cut the chamber to adjust the heading. you must get a set of heading plugs for this job. 7600 does come in a carbine for this. A new facotry barrel will run you close to 200 after shipping , proof,  and test

Don't have a clue who you are , but in the three days since you joined this sight you have like 50 posts . How can anybody know so little and have so much to say . You know just about nothing about Rem. 760/7600 pumps ! You don't even know how they are put together . It's obvious to me ( who has worked on them almost exclusively for 25+ years ) that your expertise lies somewhere else . Slow down and dispence good info or none at all . If you don't know the answer , that's okay , someone who does will be along ! Welcome to the forum , read and learn .
