project possibilities
« on: February 15, 2010, 08:52:56 AM »
i recently bought a hunsman bbl. with a stuck breechplug, knowing full well the bore may be bad,. well the jury's still out on the bore (it doesn't look good though), but i'm looking at the possibilities ahead of me. i know there are some outfits that will rebore (a .54 huntsman sounds nice!), or i suppose i could reline or stub the breech. (i have a .458 groove 1 in 24 stainless bbl. that's just singing for use!) i'm entertaining suggestions, with details about the mechanics for applying them!

Steel wool the bore and shoot it? Send it to Remington and say it doesn't work? Cut it to 16.5" and have a BP truck gun? Adapt one of those blank powered golf ball shooters? Speargun for mangrove snapper. From shore :)

I like the speargun idea. What do you think would be a good starting charge?   ;)

clean out the bore and shoot it . i have seen some black powder guns with nasty bores still shoot just fine with the right load . 80 grains of powder and a tight fitting bullet and it may still be deer accurate at 70 yards or so .

my step dad has a traditions side lock that has a pitted bore , with 85 grains of goex and a t/c 240 grain shock wave its dead on at 70 yards . if it don't shoot straight then a re-bore or possibly have it made into a smooth bore and have screw in chokes fitted .
