used Security 6's suddenly scarce?
« on: January 01, 2010, 10:58:27 PM »
Maybe I'm not watching closely but once in a while I check the online auctions. Sometimes I wish for a snubbie Security 6. So I ran searches on Auction Arms and Gun Broker. Very few hits for any security 6 and the prices seem pretty high. Seems like there used to be a fair number on auction at any given time - mostly 4 and 6 in bbl models. Have they become a hot item lately or is this just an "off" time to find them?

The gun owners and potential gun owners have always been a pretty easy herd to stampede. Availability goes down, prices go up. The current federal administration doesn't want to take on the NRA yet. If state and local goverments fail it could get pretty grim. Guns are still a good investment, better than our worthless money.

Dunno about the "suddenly" part but around here locally I've not seen one of the old Ruger guns of that type for sale in years. I think it must be close to 20 years maybe more since Ruger discontinued that line and went to the SP and GP lines. Guns that old are generally in short supply.

They are getting harder to find around here also and the prices are going up. I paid 200 for my snubbie a few years ago and I saw one the other day the guy wanted 400 for it. I would like to find one with a 4" tube at a good (read cheap) price.

There was a stainless snubbie Security Six that ran in the local buy, sell, trade magazine for several weeks before it quit running. Price was around $400.00 or so. Don't know if it sold or the owner got tired of re-upping the ad.

Try looking for a Speed Six they might be easier to come by. It's the same gun but with non adjustable sights.

Yeah I know the Sec 6 is an old model but on the auctions and Guns America there used to be quite a few listed steadily for $250-$400. The snubbies weren't real common but 6 and 4 inch barrels were. Looked over Guns America and I see a few 4 inchers and a couple 6 inchers but prices go from $400 to I think $700 +. Guess its the old supply and demand. I have a 4 inch stainless that I shoot better than almost any other of my handguns. Darned solid too. So I must infer that similar S&W guns have gone up in cost as well. Haven't looked. Thanks for comments guys.

Best revolvers ever made IMHO.
I'd like a good Speed-6 in 4".
Hard to find. Also expensive like every other handgun these days.

I always wished ol' Ruger would have made one in 5-shot .44 Sp. or .45acp with moon clip.

You would think guns used by many police depts. would be pretty common.  I wish I'd bought a Model 10 S&W when they were cheap and plentiful.

I still kick myself for not buying my neighbors Security Six a few years ago. It was a 4" barrel stainless model. He wanted $225 for it and I remember thinking that was too much at the time. Silly me. I did see a model 10 a few weeks ago at a local gun store with a 4" heavy barrel for $200. If I wasn't getting divorced I would have snatched that right up. It went quick.

Seems like one of the national internet sales guys of used guns had a bunch for sale last year.
May have been J&G or one of the others, wish I had picked one up.

I was in a gun shop today and remembered this post. They had a Security Six snub SS with Pachmyer grips for $459.

  This was in Lakeland, Fla.

It must have been a holiday lull. I checked Gunbroker yesterday.  While there weren't a lot of Sec 6, Service 6 or Speed 6, there were more than when I originated this post. Prices were all over the map.

I had a SS security Six 4" I bought new that I sold to a friend for the price of a .44 mag.

About four years ago the guy wants to sell it back to me. I asked what he wanted for it, and he said $200, and he'd throw in a shoulder holster, a speed loader, and the holster and bullet mold that he got when I sold it to him.

My Son said I robbed the guy...

Found my snubbie last year for $319 w/rubber grips.  Grabbed it up.  Just found another one the other day at a pawn shop for $389.  Still there.

How many were made before Ruger switched to the GP series?  Sooner or later, discontinued used guns find their way to a happy owner who intends to keep them.

I am lucky enough to have several police supply stores near here . The two i visit both get police trade ins and both buy confiscated guns and resell them . Since Christmas i have seen 2 such guns one was a 6 inch gun for 300 dollars and the other a 4 inch gun for 285 . Both were OK with some wear but tight. Both were gone in a week.  At the gun shows here i still see some from time to time , in the 250 350 range.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Bought my 4'' in 83 for 87.00, love the gun wouldnt even think of selling it, got one for my son just before the GP series came out, not sure, that one was 225.00, and it had all kinds of safety stuff stamped on the barrel, a friend said it was because Ruger lost alot being sued.

I think I may have messed up on a pretty good deal yesterday at a local gun show. I always been pretty fond of the older blued Security Six's. There was a 6" blued 25th Anniversity in factory box. It was in very good shape. But it looked a little too shiny to be factory blued. So I passed on it. It was $ 325. I know where the dealer is from so I may follow up on it at a later date.

I picked up a 6" on gunbroker last week for $280 shipped. Not much bluing is missing, and it has been worked over. I really like it. WOuld not trade back for the BH 30 carb I sold to pay for it.
