today's range time with the 30/06
« on: February 15, 2010, 12:45:59 PM »
Found something interesting when I went to the range today with my Handi 30/06. I had 10 rounds of 180 gr. Sierra RN I wanted to test, along with some other random loadings. The random loads were shot first (about 12 rounds total), then the Sierras were shot. Notice that shot #1 is at about 6:00 and shot #2 is at about 9:00, and the rest are generally clustered in the bull. To me this illustrates that at least this barrel needs to have at least a dozen rounds fired through it before it settles down and becomes more accurate. That's one assumption. Another would be that I had my head up my ^$$ when I was shooting the preceeding rounds. It's been known to happen.

If it was a clean barrel when you started, chances are good your 1st assumtion is right.
I had a pol months ago now about cleaning, when's and how often, and the general consencus is they like dirty to shoot good.
And it holds true with my barrels, I was surprised to find I actually over fouled my 7-08 testing some barnes TSX, so much so that it schewed my test results, but that's another thread, Yup, they like some fouling.
