Scagel style grind
« on: August 31, 2003, 05:09:19 AM »
I just finished one, "last time I swore I won't do it again"  Takes forever to grind a knife that way.  Slack belt is the only way I can come up with it and that takes about 1 hour per blade to grind.  It should be pretty though.  Has anyone else figured out an earier way???

Heh, nope. Couple of times I did a full convex, that's the only way I could do it.  Seems like if you practiced enough, you could develop a  "roll motion" off the platen, but not that interested in convex.  To tell the truth, though, most of my flat grinds are very slightly convex, just the way I grind.  But only very slightly.  Still think flatgrinding produces the best cutting blade geometry, although hollowgrinds might have the best cutting edge(as opposed to blade) geometry.  SInce I build them as general purpose woods knives that's what I grind.  Do like a convex edge if the customer wants one.

I agree most everything I make and sell is flat ground, I have heard many times that the roll edge sharpening refered to as Bill Moran way of sharpening.  I can hollow grind but I don't like to.  I do about 6-8 shows ayear.  Depends how many blades I have left at CHRISTmas.  Need to be out in my shop now instead of on computer.  Send me a pic of some of your work.

Have you ever tried doing a convex grind using a round orbital sanding disk?

I'm trying to picture How you'd get a clean "plunge" line that way.  Probably beyond my ability, Unless I also wanted to do some serious file work to clean that line up.  I've a disk sander on one of my Grinders, and have toyed with the idea of grinding with the 8" disk facing me.  That might work better, but at this point can't say.
