I don't have children yet, but I have a 12 and 10 year old little sister. The 10 year old is still in the 22 and 22 magnum point of rifle shooting. Getting better, but not there yet.
Now the 12 year old on the other hand, I bought her a Rossi 243 which turned me into a Handi man (another story for another time) and she killed two deer with it, but it wasn't very accurate. She wanted to keep hunting so I sold it and put that towards a good scope for my back-up rifle and turned the primary over to her. (I just couldn't justify or afford to buy her one just like it and she loved it so...) She killed an 8 year old 5 point for a cull this year on our lease at 250 yards with the A-Bolt 243 right at last shooting light. It was her first hunt by herself, or so she thought (I was in a ladder stand about 60 yards from the hunting house she was in) and held out patiently for the deer I had told her to shoot. She showed more patience than most of my friends I let hunt my place. I gave her time after the shot to see what she did because the deer ran about 50 yards. She waited 25 minutes like I do and then (and yes I watched the whole thing through my bino's) she unloaded the gun, climbed down, reloaded, and went to where she shot the deer, and then lo and behold began tracking it (I was kinda disappointed cause her father and I had both told her to not roam off unless we were with her.) so I climbed down and ambled over. By the time I got there she had found the deer and was taking pics.
It bought tears to my eyes and the next generation of hunters began.
Sorry for the long post, but I am very proud of my sisters accomplishments, and I also wanted to tell you that if you teach them by example, they will be successful and make you proud.
