Roundball barrels for an inline?
« on: February 16, 2010, 05:06:31 PM »
Does anyone make roundball barrels that are round and not octagonal in shape?
How hard would it be for a machinist to replicate a barrel similar to a Knight Wolverine?
Kind of like a drop-in barrel for an inline.

A true round ball barrel will be slow twist and with cut, not button rifling...Some have had success shooting target loads with balls either in sabots or patched but inlines just aren't made for balls...If you are looking for a cheap projectile for practice, buy bulk pistol bullets...

I don't want to shoot pistol bullets.  I want to shoot roundballs.

Inlines with a slow twist barrel would shoot roundballs fine.

You want a 1:60 - 1:66 twist and 33-38 inches long

Just build a flintlock, We know you really want one

I am fearful that it would be cost prohibitive to get a barrel made for that gun. Some of the early inlines were made with a 1 in 48 twist which should shoot them pretty good but it would be hard to find one although occassionally you do see one for sale. I know a few people who shoot roundballs with a low powder charge in the fast twist rifles and they have good accuracy. Hope this helps.

You are a man after my own heart.
I like to hunt with round balls.
I had to get an inline a few years ago, vision getting bad, had to have a scope.
I hunt in the thick woods of North Carolina, longest shot is 75 yards. The roundball is all I need.

But, nobody makes an inline with the slow twist.

Hey Forestclimber, there's a barrel maker in West Virginia by the name of Ed Rayle.  He also re-bores and re-rifles barrels.  I understand his prices are very reasonable - less than the cost of a new barrel.  You might give him a call (304-364-8269) and see if he can/will re-rifle your existing barrel with a deep cut slow twist.  Can't hurt to ask.

Fast twist barrels will shoot a patched round ball just fine.

Thanks Semisane.  I've had Ed Rayl's barrels and met him.  I had that very idea but never did it.  Maybe now I will.

I have looked for some info on the man after reading Semi's post. It sounds as if he is a true artist. I am out of my league on this one but I would think it would make the barrel an odd sized bore.

flintlock:

I am from Atlanta, and, thank God, I am now far from Atlanta.

I live in this little log cabin I built on top of a mountain near Marshall, NC. Way out in the wilderness.

I know you have a Knight rifle but  if the cost is real high to modify or have a new barrel made I believe the TC Custom Shop still offers a .50 caliber 1/48" barrel for the Encore if you look for a used rifle or action it might be an option.
