Decoy Madness
« on: January 07, 2009, 04:38:55 PM »
I have predator hunted for a couple of years.  I want to get a couple of good decoy.  I took a look at Cabela's sight to see what decoy's they had.  One was called, Edge Expedite "Yote" Coyote decoy.  It's a 3D coyote, has anyone used this type decoy before?  If so, did it work well?

The other one I want to get is the Mojo critter.  I bought it a few years back.  I left the batters in it for to long and they drain into the decoy and recked it.  I would like to get another exactly the same.  Does this sound crazy?  It work well before I broke.  Should I just get one of these decoy's, or should I get both.  Please give your opinion.

That Mojo worked for you once and can work for you again. They (the decoy's) may draw a Coyote out of the thicker stuff as sometimes they will be to wary to show if they dont see anything happening in the open patches. I dont know what that Mojo cost but you can get by with simpler ideas such as those said in the Ultimate Decoy thread on page 2 here.

I have the coyote dec that you are referring to.  While I have never had a yote respond when I have had it out, I think it would work- especially in the latter part of the season when territory is everything. Pretty esy to carry around too.  I have a rabbit decoy that sits on a stake and has a decoy heart in it.  On two occassions, I have had predators respond to calling and when they saw it, they were staring intently at the moving dec oblivious to anything else around them.  Decoys are a good thing IMO.
It's all a hot mess...........

To me, this looks like the one of the cheapest, AND most functional decoy out there.  Can't find it locally, so I'm ordering it.

I hear battery life is very good, with adjustable speed setting to boot!  Give it a little paint and it's good to go.  This looks ideal for deep-woods bobcat!

There is video of this toy in action somewhere on the net.  The erratic, and un-predictable movement of this decoy is very impressive (I'll find it again, save it, and post here when I do).

I use a quiver critter, a rabbit decoy that moves around, about $25, and I put a turkey decoy by it.  I am also a falconer and have used red tail hawks to hunt rabbits.  So I figured that a coyote would try to steal a meal from a hawk.  Also I have had coyotes and bobcats try to eat my turkey decoys, that's where I got the idea.  Also deer seem fascinated by my turkey decoys.
It seems to work pretty good.

Just a bit off topic but I often wander if the Great Horned Owl is successful in bluffing a Coyote, or especially a Fox out of it's meal just based on the frequency that I see them come in to the call.

That Wal-Mart cat toy looks promising, till I think about the Great Horned Owls present in my hunting area.  I've had them rip hats off my head, don't think anykind of moving decoy will work for me.  Too many owls, hawks, and Eagles.

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I grew up on a wildlife preserve, around a lot of owls, lucky to ever see them, never an animal I thought was very active.  Until I started coyote calling, and they are deceivingly fast, had one on a glide at one stand, so I hit some mouse squeaks because I wanted to see if I could draw him in.  I was standing up, looking straight at him as he was gliding towards me at eye level, a few little pumps of his wings and he went from blue heron to fighter jet, I had to swing my arms to make it bank away.

He was about 5 feet from my head...  cool, but nuts, those suckers are stealthy

As far as decoys, my buddy has the little rabbit decoy that kind of shakes a bit, I don't know if it is the quiver rabbit or not.  Just not enough motion to get attention if you ask me, it is also a bit small, may work for dogs that are already close, but I think something like the mojo critter/ jack in the box is a better choice.  I just bought the mojo critter myself, good motion, gets the "tail" wagging up in the air for good visibility, very enticing.  The jack in the box is a little more tame, but same kind of deal, decoy off the ground for visibility, good movement and with a call built in.

Go over on predatormasters and those guys are nuts about the mojo critters, there is often guys putting up videos where you can see reactions, guys starting threads about their decoys being destroyed by incoming dogs, or them accidentally shooting them when a dog tries to hit it...  Figured I would give it a shot.

Good luck out there
