San Antonio and Orlando in July...what should I hunt???
« on: November 22, 2009, 03:55:51 PM »
Hi All,

I need to go on a business trip to San Antonio next summer and then Orlando the year after.  I'd like to attach two and half days of hunting to each trip.  The dates for both meetings are in mid-July.

If you were me...what would you consider hunting in each location at this time of year??

BTW..no interest in hogs...at all.

The shade.  Or mosquitos.  The first will be welcome, the second will find you.  Just funnin', I have no idea what you could hunt that time of year in Fla.  In Tx. there might be a few things open season, varmints and such.  Maybe some of the Florida boys might have a clue.  I'm sure there are coyotes there as well, but have no idea if you could hunt them then, or where.

:) Howdy!  There are numerous exotic hunting ranches that have aoudad, axis deer, and sheep and goats around San Antonio.  Javelina may be hunted year round with a bag limit of 2 per license year. Squirrel is year round with no bag limit. Rabbits and hares is year round, no limits. Predators including coyote, bobcat, and mountain lions may be hunted year round as they are not protected in Texas. You should be able to find plenty of hunting to keep you busy. It sure get hot though in July.  Best of luck!  Always, Gene

Happy Trails!

I'm thinking Aoudad and ????

I know that axis is in hard antler, but, Florida would be a good place for axis.  I'll need to check my SCI record book and see what state produces that highest scoring axis though....if I'm going to do it I might as well do it where I'll have the chance to take the best I can for the money.

There is no season in Texas for exotics so it's just a matter of what is best for that time. The area around San Antonio is prime territory for exotic ranches and you can probably find just about any exotic there. You can also hunt coyote and hogs.

I sure hope you like to sweat!  ;D

At 777 Ranch you could hunt Cape Buffalo for $50K or Bongo for $30K.  ;D

Or you could just join me for a plains game hunt in Africa in May.

Doug,

Have you tried hunting gators? That is what I think of when I think of hunting Florida.

Hey Elmer!!

Gators in Florida....hmmmm...wonder if I could do a gator/alligator gar combo????   we'll see.  I'll probably give my friend Ken Wilson (Sportsman-on-Film) a call.  I've hunted with him several times and he's a great fellow!!

Africa is out for a few more years I'm sorry to say....

Elmer, are you serious?  Does the 777 actually have real African Cape Buffalo?   I wouldn't pay 50K to hunt anything, but I had not heard that they were even available here.  Last I had heard, they were a bit too expensive and dangerous to bring over and stock.  We see lot sof exotics that have either escaped, or been intentionally released from game ranches, but never something like that.  That could be a real bummer coming across one of those while be-bopping to my deer stand one afternoon.   :D

I don't know, but they advertise it on their website. It is owned by Jeff Rann who also owns Rann Safari in Botswana. But frankly most of the exotics here are so expensive that unless your time is worth a lot more than mine it's cheaper to make the trip to Africa. Some examples are:

Wildebeest  $5,500 vs $950
Zebra  $5,000 vs $1,200
Impala  $5,000 vs $350
Blesbok  $5,500 vs $400
Sprinbok $5,000 vs $380
Kudu  $15,000 vs $1,500

Ironically they are listing Sable for $15,000 also which is around $10,000 in South Africa.

Heck JJHack has a 9 day (7 days of hunting) package for $4800 (plus air fare).

Cape buff in the US are rejects from zoos. They sell them off when they get old and sick to places that they offer folks with more money than sense a chance to shoot one. At most a half dozen or less per year come available like this.

Just amazing....what kinda disposable income do ya hafta have to pay 50k or whatever for 1 animal.  I was on a ranch in Pearson TX and there was this sable, about a 35" running around.  The owner was going to give me a deal on him, $8,500....i passed.  I wanted the deal on the 37" aoudad...but...he passed....

Dunno Doug but I'll never have that kinda money. But if you were a multi millionaire many many times over or a billionaire and the annual income was in the millions doing such a thing would amount to no more than a fellow like me buying a box of ammo.

If I were a billionaire which I of course never will be I'd not even think about such things if I wanted to do it I'd just do it with no regard to cost. Perhaps that kinda thinking is why I'll never even be a millionaire.  ;D

Hahahah...GB...you're right on!!  I was hunting in VT in 2006, WildHill, and there were some fellows from NY.  Nice guys all!  One had just come from an elephant hunt in Africa, like within the last couple of days.  He went and shot a tremendous bison...really...gigantimundo....had to be 3,500lbs or something.  The head, stood on its chin, was almost chest high on me.  Anyway, he told the butcher to have at it and ship the meat and hide frieght....All told that was about a 6k proposition...like nothing.  I asked the owner, what's he do???  Seems he owns a NY baseball team..........man.......

I did a hunt out in that general area about that time of year when I went for axis and while the days are gonna be hot the mornings aren't bad and evenings are OK as well. The deer really are more active then and especially when it's really hot they begin to come out as the sun drops low to the horizon and the shadows get long.

If ya get out and do a lot of mid day walking it's gonna get hot tho.

I hunted gators outside of orlando with Danny Santangelo.Had a great time, you can hunt them with a rifle on private property. Hunted for hogs at the same time. Danny is the guide at Brady Ranch also. As for San Antonio I'll let you know,I'm going to the Y-Bar ranch next month.
